Product Description

Book Description

Alan Emmins sleeps on the streets of New York for 31 days. When writing a feature about murals painted under the pavements of Manhattan by homeless artists, Alan Emmins was challenged by a homeless dancer to try homelessness himself to understand what he was writing about. He took up the challenge. His diary about the people he met reveals an invisible world, full of surprises.

5.0 out of 5 stars I will be recommending this book for a long time., 27 Sep 2006
This review is from: 31 Days: A New York Street Diary (Paperback)
I loved this book. 31 Days takes you deep into a world that you can otherwise only speculate about. Homelessness is one of those subjects that everybody has an opinion about, often, like myself, a wrong opinion. 31 Days allows you to see how it really is living on the streets. The subtle portraits of homeless life are dark in places, but the author handles the subject very well and seems to lighten the book up when needed by sharing a few of his own humorous experiences and showing his own naiveté and misconceptions without taking any thing away from the subject matter. In fact that is one of the best things about the book, the author doesn't tell you anything about homelessness, you experience it as he does, and he does have some incredible experiences with some incredible characters. I will be recommending this book for a long time.

This review is from: 31 Days: A New York Street Diary (Paperback)
This is not the usual kind of book that i would choose off the shelf, but having been given a copy and knowing the writer himself i gave it a go. The style the book is written in, is very down to earth and after the 1st few pages I found it very hard to put down, wanting to know what was going to happen to him next. A very hard subject to write about as most of us do not want to hear about "the homeless" and in this case, the lengths the author went to, to research this book...well that took a lot of courage! A good book, which i have already recommended to several friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars A realistic take on homelessness and NYC, 29 Sep 2006
This review is from: 31 Days: A New York Street Diary (Paperback)
I really enjoyed 31 Days. It captures a realistic side to NYC than

you see when rushing about in the city. It humanizes an issue

that most people either don't want to think about or have

misconceptions of and it does it without parading other peoples

misery. At times the book was very funny, at others sad, but never

dull. I recommend this book to everybody who lives in New York, or

just loves New York, or who just wants a great book to read.
