Heather has been around for a good long time now and her style and approach really never changes to any great extent...but she still has one the most beautiful voices in the business. Her difficulty is that she is one in an overcrowded genre...the female singer/songwriter. While she can sing the pants off most of them, she perhaps lacks the cutting edge of the likes of Polly Harvey, Liz Phair, Beth Orton et al and is being outflanked by the great newcomers such as Laura Marling. That said, this is an album that will not dismay her faithful followers...and I just happen to be one of that breed...good on ya Heather!!

The Heather Nova of the 1990s was a peerless singer-songwriter, combining a singularly beautiful voice with brave songwriting, experimental but very accessible, stylistically and lyrically. Things started to go wrong rapidly after 1998's powerhouse Siren, during which period the featuring of her music on the likes of Songs From Dawson's Creek served to raise her profile, and so things started to go South, a record-company-guided exercise in commercial banality. Heather responded to this by returning to Big Cat Records, the indie that launched her, and releasing Storm, her simplest record and by far her best of the 2000s. That was some eight years ago now, and she lost her way rather in the interim, producing competent but unremarkable records that didn't really demand repeat listening. With 300 Days at Sea, we see another reboot: Heather is now label-free, self-releasing, testing the waters of the emerging web-driven music industry model. And the outlook is good.

Obviously here is an older wiser more comfortable Heather; she is now long settled back in her native Bermuda, and much of the adventurous, inquisitive lyrical style of Glow Stars and

Heather Nova has long been my favourite singer/songwriter and it's fair to say that the release of her new album has been more than eagerly awaited.

Although, after a handful of plays, it's still too soon to rate this as possibly her finest album, I'm going to stick my neck out and say that I do think that in time '300 Days At Sea' will be regarded as just that.

Heather has put together a very fine collection of songs here, with the albums first four tracks, 'Beautiful Ride', 'Higher Ground', 'Stop The Fire' and the wonderful 'Save A Little Piece Of Tomorrow', seeing a return to the full band sound of much of Heather's earlier work.
There's a moment of reflection on the emotional 'Everything Changes' before the album really begins to kick into gear, 'Do Something That Scares You' leading into the truly beautiful 'The Good Ship 'Moon'', my favourite track on the album and possibly the most beautiful song that Heather has written.

The excellent 'Turn The Compass Round' follows and the album finishes with a flourish, 'Burning To Love', 'I'd Rather Be', 'Until The Race Is Run' and the closing track 'Stay' bringing proceedings to an end.

Vocally, Heather remains a true talent and in an age when so many 'popstars' rely on tricks, technology and hype to achieve their short-lived success, it remains a mystery that so few people have heard of the Bermuda based singer/songwriter.
