Expensive, but nice 28 Jan. 2012

Colour Name: Brushed Stainless SteelSize: 46 Litre
I always laughed when I saw the >$100 trash cans in the store. Then, one day, I bought one. Wow, this thing is nice. I never thought I'd say that about a trash can.

We keep this in our kitchen. I finally caved and bought it so we'd have a place to toss garbage and recycling and have it all look nice. It fits those needs very well.

We buy the simplehuman bags for the trash side. They work great. On the recycle side, I put in the free bag that came with it (I think it came with two, actually) and whenever it fills up, I take it out to the garage and sort the bottles, cans, etc into the bigger bins out there. After many months, we're still on the original recycle-side bag.

I taped the reciept to the inside of the stainless steel part of the bin. This cost enough I plan to make good on the warranty (10-years, I think) if it breaks. But, after quite a bit of use, it shows no sign of breaking any time soon.

Best available, but not perfect 7 Oct. 2013

After a year of use in a busy household, I appreciate the build quality of this canister more now than I did when new. I did a thorough cleaning of the unit, and it has withstood daily use very well: the stainless steel is thick enough to not have been dented anywhere at all and the lid-raising mechanism remains solid.

As I said previously, I still wish the individual compartments were larger, and this is still the biggest drawback to the canister.

This trash/recycler is a well-built, sturdy addition to the kitchen. In terms of build quality, I have no complaints. However, when it comes to form factor, I would prefer a 20%-30% size increase for each of the trash/recycling compartments.

Simplehuman's sample bags fit great and work well, but realistically I'm not going to buy special bags -- I'm going to use the box of 9,000 kitchen bags that I already have. If each compartment were wider and slightly deeper, then I wouldn't be wasting so much of each standard size bag each time, and there would be more time between bag changes.

Each household is different, but I found it best to use the big side for recycling and the little side for trash.

Great product...AND it has2 wheels in the back! 5 Dec. 2012

Colour Name: Brushed Stainless SteelSize: 46 Litre
Like others, I can't believe I'm writing a review about a trash can, but it is worth the review for others to read. YES, this is an expensive item, but I still recommend it. I couldn't believe I paid $130 for a TRASH CAN!!! (Find and use a coupon from your store, if applicable).

The dog won't get into the trash now. So I saw this online, read the reviews, and knew I had to see this in person first. I think the size is fine...not too big, and not too small.

I needed something sturdier and taller than what I have and didn't want 2 different trash cans. We are recycling a lot more, so we use the smaller blue bin for trash and the bigger one for recycling. I also taped a listing of what is recyable in my neighborhood and what is not, and that has helped with the sorting.

What is not mentioned anywhere is that there are 2 wheels in the back of the trash can! That means I can put it next to the stove when cooking and next to the sink when cleaning. And it's not the kind of design to where you will push the petal and the trash moves because it has wheels. It will move only when you tilt it a slight bit. It is not heavy at all, just sturdy.

I plan to buy the replacement bags via Amazon, as that is better pricing. There are 3 bags of both sizes that come with this trash can. And yes, they do fit perfectly around the bins.

My only complaint on this product is if you hit the pedal too hard to lift the lid, it will open quickly and sometimes hit the wall. Not damaging to the wall or lid, but it can be noisy. The slow closure on the lid is really nice. You can walk away as it's finishing the closing of the lid.

Can't Go Wrong With Simplehuman Cans 22 Dec. 2012
By Frank G. - Published on
Colour Name: Brushed Stainless SteelSize: 46 Litre
We had been using a cylindrical Simplehuman trash can for years, and have been every pleased with it. However, we really wanted an "all-in-one" solution for our recycling, since the little office wastepaper basket we had been using was unsightly and always in the way. Another Simplehuman can was our first choice, and after some research, it was pretty easy to circle back to them for a second purchase. We've been using the "Rectangular Recycler" for a few weeks now, and it's definitely lived up to our expectations for a Simplehuman product -- attractive, functional, and sturdy. Our original can now lives in the garage, where we use it for "dirty garbage" (dog poop, emptying the diaper pail, vacuum cleaner bags, etc.).

The two internal trash containers are sturdy, and the little hole in the back of each to stuff the excess bag is really helpful. The larger trash side uses liner size H, while the smaller recycling side uses liner size D. There's even little stickers in each can to remind you what bag size to buy - handy! A standard thirteen gallon kitchen trash bag works well in the trash side (as an aside, Glad Forceflex are probably the best ones going), and you can get away with one in the recycling side in a pinch, but there's an awful lot of bag bunched up in there.

I should note that I don't know if this model, CW1830, is going to be around much longer. It appears that Simplehuman has updated it to the CW2007, which is the same basic can with a wider foot pedal. When you look on the Simplehuman website for recycling solutions, it directs you to the CW2007 instead of this model. We got a great deal on the CW1830 during Macy's "Friends & Family" sale, and a slightly different foot pedal didn't seem worth the $50 price difference.

While Simplehuman has some of the priciest trash cans out there, in my experience, they also have the best!

Happy with purchase but wish it were a bit bigger 24 Jan. 2014

A lot to like about this trash/recycling can. It looks really nice with stainless appliances. The height is perfect for my needs and the step on part works perfectly. One of my favorite features is how you can keep the lid open without keeping your foot on the lever. There is a little button you push that keeps the lid open when you want. This is a very handy feature while you are cooking and want to throw food scraps away as you cook. I use this feature a lot. I also love that I can roll it around the kitchen to wherever I am working without having to lift it. It has a handle cut out on the back that makes it easy to slip your hand in and pull it around without smudging the surface with fingerprints.

We had to reverse the bins because the recycling side is so small it fills up really fast, especially if you have mixed recycling (bottles, cardboard together.). So we are experimenting with using the larger side for recycling instead as some others suggested. The only problem I've found with that is that the bags that come with it (though you don't have to use their bags) seem to be thinner for the smaller side so heavy trash may rip the plastic. Hasn't happened yet, but I'm wondering if it might.

Another minor complaint: I think it woudl actually be better if the step on lever was black. If you like it to stay nice and clean, it's just another thing you have to wipe down. Same with the lid. I did notice that they now have a version with a black plastic top, and although I love the way mine looks, if I were going to order another one, I'd probably go with that just to cut down on the cleaning aspect.

But overall I am very happy with this purchase. For months I kept asking myself if I was crazy for spending this much money on a trash can, but I'm glad I did. I like not having my recycling sitting in a box in the kitchen, and I like the convenience of having both in one.

Tip: If you decide to switch sides like I did, you might find yourself throwing things in the wrong side because you get used to opening, throwing and that's it without thinking. I made labels and stuck them on the inside of the lid and that really helps me to remember which side to use without destroying the look of it. Hope that helps someone else too!
