From Amazon.co.uk

The problem with vampires is that, usually, they can't go out in daylight. That means that, however menacing they might be after sunset, when morning rolls around again, the heroes can just dig 'em up and stick a stake in them. 30 Days of Night sidesteps the whole daylight problem by setting its story in Barrow, Alaska, a town which is so far north that during the winter, the sun doesn't rise for a month at a stretch. It's such a perfect setting for vampires that it's almost shocking no-one's thought of it before now.

30 Days of Night has another trick up its sleeve, too. Its vampires aren't gothic hedonists who enjoy their claret out of jewelled goblets. Nope, these are vicious, nasty, brutal creatures who'd snap your neck as soon as look at you. They look terrifying, all misshapen foreheads and far too many teeth, and the creepy shrieking noise they make only makes it worse; they seem entirely inhuman. Barrow's isolated, blizzard-stricken location makes for a literally chilling atmosphere even before the monsters show up.

The plot loses its way towards the end, and the inevitable triumph of the heroes stretches logic to its limits, but the setting is original enough to make up for that. 30 Days of Night isn't a film you'll forget in a hurry. --Catherine Haskins

Product Description

Josh Hartnett and Melissa George star in this big-screen adaptation of the vampire comic books by Steve Niles. In the sleepy, secluded Alaska town of Barrow, the sun sets and doesn't rise for over 30 consecutive days and nights. From the darkness, across the frozen wasteland, an evil is on its way that will bring the residents of Barrow to their knees. The only hope for the town is the Sheriff and Deputy, a husband and wife team who are torn between their own survival and saving the town they love.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Horror on a Good Blu-Ray 18 Aug 2009
By jcmacc VINE™ VOICE
Format:Blu-ray
The Film is a faithful take on a graphic novel and makes full use of the great central idea from the source material, a band of vampires attack a far Northern Alaskan town just as the sun is about to set for a full month. What follows is effectively an extended riff on the "trapped in a house" set-up of Night Of The Living Dead as a small group of survivors attempts to hide out and make it until the sun rises again. The vampires are as far away from Tom Cruise or Twilight style "gothic love interests" as they could be and gore levels are high, not a surprise given the involvement of Peter Jackson and his Weta special effects workshop (how he'd loved to have had access to these effects to play around with for Bad Taste or Braindead). That said, the messy stuff fits with the story and in the main nothing feels tacked on for the sake of it and the shock moments drive the plot.

The Blu-Ray is high quality using a top-notch film transfer. The opening long shots of a single figure walking through the Alaskan snow are especially stunning and the visuals are good throughout despite 90% of the film taking place at night. There are some reasonable extras too which are worth sitting through (not always the case), notably an interesting "Making Of".

Given the Blu-ray is at a good price this is definitely one to get as a Hi-Def disc over the DVD version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surround Sound Sensation ! 5 Jan 2010
Format:Blu-ray
For a film that takes place for the most part at night, hence the title, this Blu-ray is brimming with detail and clarity throughout. But Blu-ray discs are not just about picture quality, which by the way is very good, they are also about sound quality and that's were this disc shines. At christmas I replaced a six year old Denon AV reiever which had Dolby-Digital and DTS, with a new Onkyo reciever (tx-sr577) that as all the HD Audio decoding onboard. I had watched this film several times before in DTS format and thought that it could not sound any better, it does, in DTS-HD Master Audio. I would'nt say it was louder but the bass is deeper and the rear speakers are more lively with sound effects, doors slamming, footsteps, gunshots, people screaming and the constant howling of the wind, yet at the same time never drowning out the speech from the centre channel. Excellent!
What about the film? Well I would rate this as one of the best vampire films of the past ten years. These are not vampires from Twilight or True Blood, but vampires from your worst nightmare, with bloodshot eyes that would make Christopher Lee envious and teeth like pirahnas (make-up and special effects are very good).
To recap, this is a very good horror film which I never get tired of and looks and sounds superb.
Highly Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Sun Has Not Got His Hat On 28 Feb 2009
By Charles Vasey TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
A top quality vampire fest with a great plot concept; vampires attacking a town towards the Arctic Circle where the polar night keeps the pesky sun at bay. The staking out of the town, the slaughter of the townspeople, the escape and battle of the survivors, and the back story of the vampires are all very well done indeed. One is reminded of THE THING and that is the sort of comparison of which any director would be proud.
