BBC Review

The Buzzcocks story is one that encapsulates the entire circumference of punk. Originally formed by Howard Devoto, in the wake of the Sex Pistols playing Manchester, they instantly struck a chord with their debut EP, Spiral Scratch. Then, almost immediately, Devoto left to carve angular diagrams and philosophical puzzles in the marvellous Magazine. That is when the more familiar strain of 'cocks came into being, with Pete Shelley taking over vocals and creating one of the more enduring bands to have emerged from 'year zero', detailing love's pitfalls over some of the finest pop punk ever made. 30, a live album, neatly encapsulates this history.

Over three decades, Buzzcocks have been coming in and out of the atmosphere to remind us of their amazingness. They've toured with some of the legends such as Nirvana, as well as Pearl Jam and last had a semi-hit in 2005 with an all star version of their classic Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)? that featured Elton John, David Gilmour and Robert Plant. By now, there should really be some kind of plaque outside their homes, or at least a bronze statuette in their honour.

Recorded at London's Forum, and released last year in a mail order and digital download version, Buzzcocks: 30 now gets a 'proper' push just in case some of their hardcore fanbase haven't quite mastered computers yet. Its 28 tracks encompass their entire catalogue. It's all here: What Do I Get, Orgasm Addict and Boredom alongside later more recent tunes such as Reconciliation from 2006's Flat Pack Philosophy. All rattle, spit and crack their way into a seamless whole. Probably not an essential purchase for those new to the band, but an essential addition to any fan's collection. --Ian Wade

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure energy! 19 Dec 2007
By Ziggy
Format:Audio CD
So, 30 years on and The Buzzcocks are still recording and touring. Who'd have thought it? More to the point who'd have thought that they'd still be as brilliant as they were in their heyday? OK, only Pete Shelley and Steve Diggle remain from the original line up but their current bassist and, particularly, their drummer are blindingly good. This live album showcases the pure energy of a Buzzcocks gig. All the hits and favourite album tracks are there with a few new tracks interspersed. One tiny criticism would be the exclusion of the absolute show stopper that is 'I Believe', but it's a small distraction. These guys can still show the young upstarts a thing or two. Go see them live - you won't regret it.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but not the best of live albums 7 Aug 2008
Format:Audio CD
I'm really pleased that the Buzzcocks are still around and making music. This album marks their 30th anniversary and so I was expecting something special. It's a live album recorded at the Forum in London, it has a generous track list which spans the band's career.

I really want to like this album but I found the sound quality rather poor even for a live album and it just didn't seem to convey any real atmosphere. I have a number of other live albums from the band and I think I would have to recommend some of those over this one, "Entertaining Friends: Live at the Hammersmith Odeon" is probably one of the best, being from 1979 it doesn't include some of their later material but for anyone looking for their first live album from the Buzzcocks I would recommend it.

Maybe I'm just getting old!

2.0 out of 5 stars Quality Control! 26 April 2011
By Joust Reddington - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
If your looking for a good recording of the Buzzers live this is not it your answer. It sounds as if it were recorded through a cell phone that just happened to be left on in your pocket for the entirety of the show, which is a shame because it actually sounds as if it would've been a great live cd. The only other problem I have with this cd is the haste in which they run through every single song as if they are running late for the airport. Granted Im well aware that they are still a great punk band but turning classics into one and a half minute thrash songs doesn't make them any punkier than the original versions. I don't know who had the final say on this release but I really hope the band had nothing to do with it since it's just not a quality recording at all. I expected so much more from an anniversary collection from one of the greatest bands ever.
