Quiet brilliance 17 April 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is the Violent Femmes at their most charming. 3 lacks the aggressive force of the debut album, and the oddness of Hallowed Grounds, but stands out as yet a new area of extreme competence. The songs are quiet and catchy in a Sunday-afternoon kind of a way. They stick with you in the nicest possible manner, like a friend you never forget.

By Daniel Jolley HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
3 is my least favorite Violent Femmes album. There are some good songs included here, but overall the quality is a little sub-par for this group. It may be interesting to note that I saw this band perform a few months after this album was released, and the concert featured only one of these songs. The pace is fairly laid-back, and it is my opinion that the Violent Femmes succeed best at uptempo, frenetic pieces. Mother of a Girl does build up to a great Gordon Gano frenzy, but lifeless tunes such as Fat and Outside the Palace serve as aural speed bumps along the path this music lays out. Faster tunes such as Dating Days, Lies, Telephone Book, and Just Like My Father just don't seem to have the kind of meaning that most VF songs have, yet they are still fun to listen to. I do like Fool in the Full Moon because it showcases Gano at his quirkiest ; the song puts me in mind of some type of tribal performance remote in location and time. Nightmares is the song most likely to appeal to those with more conventional musical tastes, but the true gems here are See My Ships and Nothing Worth Living For. The first of these two songs is wistful and as close to achingly beautiful as the Violent Femmes are ever likely to get, while Nothing Worth Living For cries out with utter despair and stirs the remotest parts of your soul. I still enjoy listening to this album every so often, but I consider it somewhat of an anomaly in this great band's discography.

Beautiful, non-cheesy, 80's rock album. 21 Oct 2001
By Maggie the Lizard Tamer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD

This is one of my favorite Violent Femmes albums - it is perfect in all aspects - the music, the cd insert art, the Femmes themselves.

The music: more grim than usual punk-like VF, this album is great to listen to when you're alone, sad, or think you're too happy. Songs such as "Nothing Worth Living For", "Mother of a Girl", and especially "See My Ships" are beautifully made songs that exhibit the excellent musicianship skills of the Femmes.

The insert art: beautifully 80's black-and-white with melancholy-looking band members distracted by a contrasting red "3". This is one of the few albums that I like to keep re-reading the insert while listening to the music.

The band itself: at this point, the Femmes were already adults, past their crazy high-school rage stage, yet at the same time they lost none of their youthful vigor and spunk.

Overall, I wish I could give this album more than 5 stars - it is entertaining and satisfying in all aspects. A must for anyone who likes rock music.

A nice change. 28 Oct 2003

After hearing "Blister In The Sun" at one too many parties, I decided to check out "3". I liked "Violent Femmes" enough to stick with them, and I'm glad I did. This may not be the crowd pleaser their other cd's are, but it's good none the less. And like the other albums, this one has it's share of sing-a-longs. "Nightmares" and "Outside The Palace" are both great. "Fat" has really funny lyrics". Then there's "Nothing Worth Living For", which is a pretty morbid change of pace, but is one of the most beautifully depressing songs ever. So if you're a fan of the band, but need a break from "Add It Up", get "3".

As "stripped down" as it gets! 6 Mar 2003

I can't believe some of these reviews. This is an amazing album as long as you approach it on it's on terms. I can see how it might have been disappointing after the first two records because it's almost completely devoid of punk influences. However, it's dark, naked, acoustic, and beautiful. The songs are great, the performances are great, and the production is great. For once Gordon's performance sounds genuine and not just a quirky affectation. I think the two ballads get a bit melodramatic, but other than that, this CD is very, very good and definitely not "for completists only"
