It's been seven long years for Dwight Yoakam fans, but this new studio album is well worth the wait. There is not one song on here I don't like, and picking a favourite would be very hard. Dim Lights, Thick Smoke (the only song not written by Dwight) is just jumpin' and I can't wait to hear it live. Same goes for A Heart Like Mine and Nothing But Love. However, it's the heartbreak songs that Dwight does best - and there is a lot of quite stunning heartbreak on this album - Trying, It's Never Alright, Missing Heart, Long Way To Go (especially the reprise track), and Rock It All Away - all quite wonderful. Dwight has never sounded better - his voice is much richer and less nasal than in his younger days and his songwriting is second to none. Even Waterfall - a fun yet cleverly written ditty - just stays with you. Be prepared for funny looks at work when you go around singing "If I had a big giraffe ...." I love Dwight, I love this album and I am sure you will too.

Dwight Yoakam through his long career has produced great albums which have never really been mainstream. As soon as his songs play, you know it is Dwight. He is unique. Most of his albums have a high energy updated Bakersfield sound. This one is a bit different and demosntrates his high level of creativity. Right from the start, it has the usual high energy almost punk attitude. The songs are perhaps more 60s pop influenced than Bakersfield Country. The songs are mostly strong and entertaining and self written (apart from one). Dwight is in good voice. The highlight for me is the classic honky tonker "Dim Lights". It is a song I have always loved. Dwight gives it a complete irreverent makevoer with whooping and hollering and it is high energy fun. Purists might not like it but great stuff. This is Dwight's first album for 7 or so years and he again stretches the boundaries with his distinctive voice and his high energy original approach to his music. This is toe tapping great fun. A great addition to his excellent catalogue and well worth buying. Recommended.

I love the energy that emanates from this album. Each track a gem.
Another masterpiece from my favourite male country singer.

One of the country originals, with a 2012 release full of gritty well produced songs.

Well,... I bought the album almost two years ago on 26 Sept. 2012.
At the time Dwight had been one of my favourites for many years.
But this album failed to grab me. Some albums grow on you with time...
This one didn't.... I thought I check here what others think about this CD.
Then pulled it out again, not for the first time, ... I wanted to decide if I should
invest £100 to travel to London tomorrow to see Dwight play live again.
I think I won't ... The album isn't bad... But it is not good either...
I guess it is benign ...

And.... .. Unless there is a hidden message somewhere
the album cover must be one of the dullest and uninspiring ones for aeons...
You wouldn't know it is supposed to be related to Country unless
you expected it to be... But then you don't really find any Country inside...

I like this album it got some good singalong tunes and some excellent twangly guitar and country style vocals and some solid rythm too, the vocals are good except for one annoying little thing he seems to hiccup alot or something but it is ok. there is some variation with piano something you don't actually hear in country music all that much at least not in the country music I am used too I like it fresh and different
