3.0 out of 5 stars By no means the greatest picture and sound quality, but a worth while DVD for die-hard Genesis fans all the same., 3 July 2008
By Lee Thomas (South Tyneside, UK) - See all my reviews

This review is from: 3 Minute Heroes (Audio CD)
First let me point out the highs and lows of this DVD...

There are 3 sections to this DVD and are as follows:
.........................................................................
1) Footage from Shepperton studios, UK. 1973

This is by far the best part of the DVD. There are 5 songs here.

Watcher of the skies
Dancing with the moonlit knight
I know what I like
The Musical box
Supper's ready

The picture quality is good for the most part. Sometimes things can get a little too dark but I actually think this has more to do with the fact that Genesis' gigs wern't as elaborately lit back then as they are now.

The sound is quite loud and clear, a slight fluttering noise can be heard during quieter moments, but it's no big deal.

..............................................................................

2) Footage from NBC studios, California, USA. 1973

Two videos here, 'Watcher of the skies' and 'The Musical box'

This part suffers more. Unfortunately these videos were damaged at several points and have had to be cut slightly, meaning that at several points during each song it jumps. A real pity as the overall sound and picture quality here is rather good. I've seen the uncut versions of these, and believe me the damaged bits were bad!

.............................................................................

3) Footage from University Sports Arena, Canada. 1974

Watcher of the skies
I know what I like
Firth of fifth
Fragments of Suppers Ready.

All these videos have some still images inserted into them at certain points, probably to replace damaged video footage. However, the audio remains intact.

Two of these videos have been horribly cut though, 'Firth of fifth' (a real shame because it ruins the song and it's the only performance featured on the DVD) and 'Supper's ready'

The sound quality during this section is good and the picture quality is OK.
.............................................................................

It's such a shame that no-body has released official, high quality footage from the Gabriel era Genesis.

Maybe that's because most of this footage is either lost or damaged, who knows? If better quality footage does exist then shame on the big record companies who haven't released it yet after all these years!

So this DVD as others have said is one of the few options available to get this footage. I for one am glad I've got it. At least somebody was bothered to release it.

So I'll conclude with...

At less than £10 for the actual DVD then it's OK. If it was over £10 and / or you're just a casual Genesis fan, then definately think twice.

If you take this DVD for what it is; a compilation of very old rare footage that's not without it's problems, but is essential for die-hard Genesis fans only, then everything should be OK.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hobson's Choice?, 13 May 2008

OK so it's bootleg quality but where else can you get this footage? More to the point who owns it? (And whatever happened to the cinema released film made of them in concert in '76/77?) It at least affords you a glimpse of what they were like if nothing more. I liked it.

5.0 out of 5 stars You do not have many choices...., 21 Dec 2007
This review is from: 3 Minute Heroes (Audio CD)
The sound quality is better than the visuals, but do you want to see this or not? What is the problem? If you can not get this footage a tiny bit better on some of the bootleg copies floating around, you do not have a choice.
I often see (mostly)young people complaining about the sound/picture quality on early 70s Genesis and Yes DVDs. If the music is not THAT important too you, then go buy your DVDs from recommendations in hi-fi mags and don`t let products documenting the MUSIC scene annoy you any more.
