Both John Etheridge and Ric Sanders were latter day members of that most celebrated of Canterbury Scene bands Soft Machine. Following the split of Soft Machine Etheridge and Sanders went on to form another band which to be fair would certainly compare favourably to late period Soft Machine. The cover in which this album is wrapped will also be of interest to British fans as the album was originally entitled First Steps and the cover uses the trademark of Clarks shoes "First Steps" children's shoes trademark.

This band only made one album but it is an absolute gem of an album and one that has unfortunately been unavailable for many years. Re issued at long last on CD. I am actually dazzled by the virtuosity of guitarist John Etheridge. I must add however that this is no widdly widdly jazz-rock outing. The music for sure is predominantly jazz-rock but the playing throughout is tasteful and at times restrained. There are moments when the band does kick things off in grand style and the track Star Dance is a fine example of this and is at times reminiscent of the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

As you would expect from any former members of Soft Machine this album will already have a built in audience ready and very willing to step up and buy this album. There are however enough rock moments to interest the casual rock fan who may be aware of the names in fact there may well even be a few folk fans attracted by Ric Sanders inclusion. The Rest of the band is made up of drummer Mickey Barker who would go on to work with Magnum, bassist Jon Davey and keyboard player Dave Bristow. Of the tracks on offer here my favourites are the Softs like opener Ice Bells and the aforementioned Star Dance but I am also fond of the folky Wynsmead, which was a nod to where Ric Sanders had been with the Albion Band and also a pointer to where he was going with Fairport Convention.

I for one am glad to see this back on the shelves and I am sure that a great many Soft Machine fans will also be pleased to find this album available once more. As an example of early eighties jazz rock this album is a particularly fine example and one that should be experienced as soon as possible.

This has been re-released (my vinyl died years ago) and it sounds absolutely great. I was reminded of this album some weeks ago because the theme music for the BBC Springwatch sounded as if it might have been an old 2nd Vision track (apparently it's not). So my searching the web got me quickly to Amazon who have it in stock and at a good price too. Good quality reproduction. The track listing on the Amazon site (as of June 2011) is of course completely wrong - but I knew what the content would be - others might not, which would be a pity.

2nd Vision...and the First Steps of new age 1 Mar 2001
By Julian Boyce - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Cutting straight to the chase: BUY THIS ALBUM. Not that I expect many people to land up on the page of an album most people will never have even heard of. But for anyone who goes astray and does: you've struck gold! Anyone who likes the idea of Pat Metheny,Secret Garden and folk-rock mixed into one scintillating texture of sound, this is the only album you need ever buy. John Etheridge is a guitarist who sits comfortably between Alan Holdsworth, Larry Coryl and John McLaughlin. Ric Saunders was showing how to do it on the electric violin before Vanessa Mae was even a twinkle in the eye! Second Vision is just so good, I even want to buy it twice just for the joy of opening the amazon.com cardboard packaging. Go on, take a chance to enjoyen jazz/celtic/rock fusion at its very finest.

A fusion classic with great compositions & awesome playing 12 Oct 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I agree with the previous reviewer. This is one to put with the fusion classics. Imagine Jean-Luc Ponty meets Jeff Beck on speed pills & you'll have a rough idea of what this record is about. Killer virtuoso rock drums, Jaco/Hellborg level bass-playing, Ponty level violin courtesy of Sanders & of course, the lightning-speed McLaughlin level guitar-chops of John Etheridge, he of the forgotten Soft Machine classic "Softs." Great production & sound also, despite being a small-label obscure release from 1980. So, to all the fusion fans out there: SEEK THIS ONE OUT, it's an awesome album with top-quality compositions & worth the time spent. I waited four weeks to finally get my copy from Voiceprint records in Europe & I was not disappointed. If you see anyone selling it used at Amazon, grab it immediately.

Excellent Fusion 30 Oct 2009

It's a shame this CD is so ridiculously overpriced. Anyone interested in Jazz Fusion would be happy to have it in their music collection, but when they see the cost, they'll probably think twice about taking a chance on a guy they've probably never heard of. Other reviewers have compared Etheridge to Alan Holdsworth and Sanders to Jean-Luc Ponty. These are fair comparisons and if you have music like that in your collection, this CD is absolutely worth a listen. The keyboard player, Dave Bristow, does some terrific playing on piano as well. For my money, tunes like 'Ice Bells,' 'Dancing Circle,' 'Putting Out the Bish,' and 'Coanda' make this CD a definite buy. I couldn't give it a five star rating, though, because in the final analysis, while Etheridge and Sanders have the technical skills of Holdsworth and Ponty, they fall just a tiny bit short on composition. I admit, I'm being picky, it's something minor and intangible that's missing. Either way, four stars is an unqualified recommendation, just not a rave review.
