This is top quality, narrative style modern English poetry, from a man who, it's fair to say, had some problems. The themes show an underlying bleakness, there is depression, alienation in there and some might find it a bit disturbed or bitter. But the pain that comes out gives the material a real edge, so I'd not hold this against him.

This collection was pulled together around the time of his death, so it's a bit mix and match. His first collection 'In' is probably the more rounded compilation, but it's a fine work nonetheless.

I became a fan of Andrew Waterhouse from his two poems "Comet" and "Another poem about the end of the world" and was anxious to get my hands on more of his work. I was disappointed in the collection as few of the poems seemed to spark the same enthusiasm in me as the poems mentioned. There is a strong sense of place and religious imagery throughout in "2nd." I am however in the process of getting his first collection of poems "In" which I hope will give more of his personal observations and unique insight.
