If you are constantly having to delete programs from your Sky planner to make room for new recordings then you might want to consider upgrading your Sky+ HD decoder, if like me, you don't qualify for any offers from Sky, then you need to fork out £199 for a new 2TB Sky+ HD decoder and a £15 self setup fee. Alternatively you can DIY and upgrade your hard drive. These WD drives are designed specifically for use in PVRs so are much quieter, consume slightly less energy and don't get as hot as normal drives and in addition they're built to be running 24/7. They also don't need the error correction codes the 'PC hard drives' require therefore they offer a smoother playback.

So I took out the 300 GB hard drive from inside my Samsung Sky+ HD decoder. A fairly simple process. Attached the drive to my PC via the internal Sata cable and created an image using a program called ExPVR. When creating the image, I was able to choose which programs I wanted to keep and transfer over to the new drive. ExPVR allows you to control which programs you want to keep or not. I chose to ignore the Sky Store/Anytime programs that Sky upload to the reserved part of the hard drive. If you don't want to keep any of the programs from your old hard drive you can use ExPVR to format the hard drive correctly so that most of the 2 TB are used for your recordings and some for Anytime. Sky boxes use a different file format to NTFS, FAT, etc. and if you put a hard drive larger than 1 TB inside the Sky box and let it do the formating, chances are that only 1 TB will be seen and anything else will be wasted. Obviously if you want to put inside only a 1 TB drive and don't want to keep existing recordings then this is the easiest option.

Bought this drive as an upgrade for a Sky+HD box and it works great. Really quiet and lots more room for recorded programmes. Would recommend if you are upgrading a PVR device.

I bought this drive to upgrade my Sky+ satellite TV box and it has performed seamlessly since installation. I was able to increase the remaining recording capacity from 4% to 85%. Well worth the money. Some drive options were reported as being noisy in operation. This unit is not.

I received both this hard drive and an Icy Box hard drive caddy on the same day, i installed the hard drive within the caddy before connecting it to my computer laptop via USB. I should also mention before i go on with this review that it came in very simple sturdy cardboard packaging, that's good if it keeps the price down.

The build date for the hard drive i received was march 2013, thus its very new, it would not be recognized as a hard drive by my computer until i went into the control panel, system and security, administrative tools and computer management and chose storage and then right clicked the rectangular box ( not the Disk 3 basic one ) and selected to make it into a simple volume and formatted it, then the drive was visible on my computer as Drive G, take note that i use the Windows 7 operating system.

I went downstairs and tried it on my Samsung plasma TV, no go, it cannot be seen by my TV, i bought it for use as a PVR and it doesn't work, i am thinking the Ice Box caddy is the issue and it will only work with Windows and Mac operating systems or its a USB 3 issue and the TV cannot see the hard drive as a mass storage device, shame that i have to return it and try yet again to get an external hard drive that works as a PVR.

I think this would be a perfect internal hard drive for those using a computer that need more storage space or to use with a caddy, i cannot find a suitable caddy that is right for 2 terabyte hard drives and thus i cannot use it for the purpose i bought it, it's still a great hard drive and i blame the caddy for the issues i have had and not the drive.

I had already upgraded my Amstrad DRX-890 Sky HD box to a 1TB Western Digital Green Power a few years ago but this was getting full. Called up Sky and asked if i could have a free or heavily discounted 2TB box for being a loyal customer. Was told to cough up £249 so gave them the middle finger and decided to go down the DIY route again. Bought this as this is specifically designed for PVRs. Used ExPVR software to copy over my 300+ recordings over to this disk (took 14 hrs!!) and the new disk runs super quiet and now have ~60% have free space. Used this guide to change the disks, requires a bit of time as the Amstrad boxes are a bit more tricky to open up compared to the older Thomson boxes but if you take your time and follow the instructions, you'll get there!

After using a non-AV specific hard-drive in my Amstrad sky+ hd, I did some review work and identified this a plausible replacement.

After the upgrade (using exPVR) all my lost recordings became available, the disk is whisper silent - ensuring no irritation and no lost recordings or hangs

The earlier non-AV hd caused recordings to be lost, and instabilities in the sky box when watching and live-pausing. Also loud clicking.
