Synopsis

TRAINSPOTTING director Danny Boyle returns to edgy form and reinvents the science-fiction/horror genre with this apocalyptic tale of viral infection and Darwinian survival. A fatal virus is unleashed on the British public following the liberation of infected chimps from a research laboratory by animal rights activists. The virus can be transmitted in one drop of blood and manifests itself within seconds, infecting its victims with a zombie-like state of murderous rage. Within 28 days the country's population is devastated, and the streets of London and Manchester are apocalyptically deserted save for a handful of healthy survivors who attempt to salvage what is left of civilization. Led by a bike messenger called Jim (Cillian Murphy), the survivors must contend with not only the hordes of plague-carrying zombies, but also with each other, as they manouevre toward a supposedly better future. Shooting on digital video and making excellent use of the bleak English landscapes, Boyle crafts a tale of societal and spiritual devastation reminiscent of horror classics like NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and SHIVERS.

3.0 out of 5 stars well made, 27 Dec 2008
By Susan Belcher "Su B" (St Helens, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I was never a zombie film fan but then the Resident Evil 1-3 Box Set (Resident Evil / Resident Evil 2 - Apocalypse / Resident Evil 3 - Extinction) [2001] were recommended to me and they converted me.

Unfortunately this film was sold to me as "the greatest zombie movie ever". I say unfortunately because I'd just watched the Resident Evil box set for the second time, and I'm afraid that this film, in my eyes, fails by comparison.

Once again the virus which causes the zombies is man-made (like in Resident Evil), but rather than the survivors launching a fightback as in RE these survivors are "normal, ordinary people" and not trained special forces. So this should make me think "I'd do that if I was in the same position", but it doesn't - I frequently thought I wouldn't have done that.

I'm not sure about saying that these are the most realistic zombies ever - I wouldn't know. All I do know is that this isn't the greatest zombie film I've seen, that glory belongs to a different film (or should that be box set).

I received this "Limited Edition" because the original owner had expected the advertised special edition - the extras though there were many were disappointing - short and almost irrelevant - they look like they have been shoved onto the 2nd so that they could package it and sell it again.

The giver also told me that there is no difference between this version of the film and any other available - there is no added footage.

2.0 out of 5 stars Same Dvd as released 5 years ago. Not new version., 8 May 2007
**This is the exact same version of the film that was released years ago. It's a Limited Edition, not a new Director's cut, which the Amazon Ad would imply.**

If you already own the original Dvd release of this excellent film, then don't waste your money on this edition. The movie disc is exactly the same as the one released years ago...5 year old trailers and all. The second disc has some incredibly short behind the scenes stuff and a couple of trailers that add up to roughly 15 minutes or so, a huge disappointment. Overall an absolute con if you were expecting an upgrade from your old 1 Disc Dvd.

The producers of this Dvd release should be ashamed of themselves. The fact they didn't even remove the old trailers is a joke. According to the Dvd, Master and Commander is coming to cinemas soon.

I would recommend buying the original release, unless you want to pay double the price for the different artwork and a 2nd disc full of pretty much nothing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed by the Limited Edition, 20 Jul 2007
By F. Fortune (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Firstly a review of the film which I can only describe as a brilliant modern day horror/thriller/fight for survival movie - think 'Day of the Triffids' that turns a bit 'Lord of the Flies' half way through. Very refreshing to see it based in the UK and shot in digital which really brings out the urban grey in the stunning shots of and empty London. The film I'd give the full 5 stars!

However, I'm very disappointed by this edition. It's the non limited edition (which I have to say is packed with extras!) but in a different box and a second disc containing about 10 minutes adverts for '28 Weeks Later'. There's nothing on the second disc that you can't find on YouTube and will probably be on '28 Weeks Later' DVD too.

I found the first chapter the of graphic novel '28 Days Later - The Aftermath' clunky to say the least and the idea of 'Rage' being the brainchild of mad scientist detracted from the integrity of the film. Is Spiderman going to save the day? It just could have been so much better.

I'd only recommend buying the Limited Edition if you haven't already got the original version.
