5.0 out of 5 stars An essential CD for Fairport/ Cropredy fans 16 Aug 2007
Format:Audio CD
I attended the 25th Fairport Cropredy festival so was interested to see if the CD captured the quality and spirit of the occasion. Well it certainly does, but also stands in its own right for those that didn't go.

The Fairport line-up then included Dave Mattacks and Maartin Alcock. The Fairport sound was more electric guitar based then (check out the almost metal version of Matty Groves, brilliant), while still encompassing the more delicate acoustic style (Crazy Man Michael). Chris Lesley also played, but as Ric Sanders' stunt double (Ric having put his arm through a plate glass window and being unable to play - he compered instead). Plenty of guests such as Robert Plant, Julianne Regan (of All About Eve fame) ...

You can see from the track lists that the 2 CDs cover a wide range of the songs performed, not just Fairport classics, so this is a good showcase for the Chaps' versatility and Catholic tastes.

The sound quality is very crisp and clean, and there is a fair amount of the banter between numbers as well. I don't think the recording has been remixed or overdubbed after the event, as they've left in mistakes like Simon Nichol getting the verses of John Barlycorn mixed up (he fumbled the words of it at this year's Cropredy as well. Must have a blind spot :-). This all helps the recording capture the atmosphere of the event well.

All in all a very good record of a very good band at a very good event. Recommended for first timers and old hands alike.

3.0 out of 5 stars more fairport!!! 9 Feb 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Don't get me wrong I am a big Fairport fan, but in my view there isn't much to get excited about once the sublime Sandy Denny and the brilliant Richard Thompson had left, not forgetting the influential Ashley Hutchings. This album does feature a solid contribution from Richard Thompson, and is as good as most of the post 1970 albums that I've heard, and I've heard too many!!! Just to make me even more popular I think that Robert Plant's version of "Girl from the North Country" is awful!!! It's a pity that he doen't sing in the same way as he does on "Raising Sand" which is a great album. Overall this is an album for Fairport obsessives and Richard Thompson diehards

5.0 out of 5 stars If It's About Fairport, It's About Fun! 26 Mar 2007
Format:Audio CD
This is awesome! One of the many "class reunions" of Fairport and various friends, including Robert Plant, for those who are not FC fans.

If you don't have this, get it right now! I can't tell you how good it is. Just listen and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Chris Leslie Saves Cropredy 3 May 2007
By Philip S. Wolf - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
First released way back in 1993 0n the Woodworm Label, this 2 CD set features Highlights from the 1992 Cropredy Festival. The Band's Ace Fiddler Ric Sanders had Tumbled through a Plate-Glass Window just prior to the start of this Big event and it all looked Very bad indeed for our Heroes. A call to Mr. Chris Leslie was made and he brought along a Fiddle and a Great Knowledge of the Music he was asked to play and because of him we have these Wonderful CD's

There are lot's of Recordings out there that Document Fairport's Big Weekend, and why should you shell out your money on this one?

There are basically Two Reasons: 1. The Great & Timeless Songs; You get 25 Selections of the Band's Best Tunes, "Matty Groves", "Crazy Man Michael", "Red and Gold" and "Close to the Wind". In addition lot's of lesser known Material is also Presented such as: "Me With You" and "Insult to Injury"

2. This Version of the Modern Fairport Showcased the Talents of Martin Allcock who Could Play just about any Instrument he could pick up, and along with Simon Nicol, Dave Pegg, Dave Mattacks and the One-Handed Talents of Ric Sanders you a Powerhouse Folk-Rock ensemble that delivers with every note they play. Of course there are 'Guests' for these Show's and for Cropredy 25 they included: Robert Plant, Richard Thompson, Dave Swarbrick, Ashley Hutchings and Ralph McTell.

Of the Highlights over the span of these Two CD's; Chris Leslie sounds Fantastic singing "I Wandered by a Brookside". Robert Plant does a fine rendition of "Girl from the North Country". Fairport Founder Ashley Hutchings leads the Band through a Lively, "Million Dollar Bash" and "Polly on the Shore" sounds Brand new as sung by the Great Ralph McTell. MR. Richard Thompson plays Blistering Lead Guitar on 7 Tracks AND sings a GREAT "Poor Will & the Jolly Hangman". And I will not leave out the Mighty Swarb who gives the Crowd a Really sweet version of "Rosie".

For me this Concert sounds even more Special than the other Cropredy Shows that have been Released, {And lot's Of Cropredy Material IS out there already}. This is essentially the BEST of the BEST as nothing else out there SOUNDS like this one, you can't go wrong in Purchasing this one...FIVE STARS!
