Product Description

Product Description

25 Cycle Routes is a new series from HMSO Scotland. Each route is specially selected for interest and enjoyment and has been cycled by the author. The maps are supported by information boxes which include: distance in miles and kilometres; start and finish points with Ordnance Survey references; type of terrain; and facilities en route. "Edinburgh and Lothian" describes off road routes mainly on tracks developed by The Regional Council, linked by road where necessary. The routes cover many different parts of this region, from reservoirs in the Moorfoot hills to the popular Beecraigs Country Park, historic Traprain Law and the Old Port of Leith.

EXPLORING ALL CORNERS OF EDINBURGH AND ITS HINTERLAND

DESCRIPTION:

Edinburgh & Lothian describes 25 cycle rides in the vastly diverse region comprising Scotland’s Capital and its surrounding countryside. From railway routes and tiny traffic free cycleways in the depth of the great city to wild rocky shorelines, castles and even older forts, there is even a hint of the hills for the more energetic.

Whether on cycle paths, abandoned railways or quiet country roads, these carefully selected rides bring a fresh perspective to the areas covered. With useful cycling tips, easy to follow instructions and specially prepared colour route maps and photographs, 25 Cycle Routes can be used with confidence.

Other titles in the 25 Cycle Routes series include: In & Around Glasgow and Stirling & The Trossachs.

EXCERPT:

From the Introduction:

This guide has two intentions. First and foremost to encourage those who are new to cycling, those who have not ridden a bike for a long time, or those who think they might like cycling, to go out and do it. Second it is designed to get you into virtually every corner of the Lothians, This applies especially to those who have lived for many years in one particular district, but never explored others.

Lothian is a beautiful region, every area having a lot to offer, from the hills to the coast and everything in between. The regional and district authorities have created many cycle facilities, and it is only right that they should feature large in a guide of this type. They are arguably the best in the country.

There are short routes, most of which are predominantly traffic free, railway routes which are totally devoid of steep gradients, the occasional canal route which is completely flat but invariably has a hilly little road to complement it, and a ride to the highest tarmac road in Lothian. Start small and work your way up. They are all enjoyable if you take your time.

REVIEWS OF THE 25 CYCLE ROUTES SERIES:

‘Whether on quiet roads, abandoned railways or cycle paths, these carefully-selected rides will bring fresh perspectives to the areas covered. Included are useful cycling tips, easy-to-follow instructions, colour route maps and photographs.’—The Scots Magazine

AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY:

Derek Purdy is an established writer, cyclist and navigator with a long-standing love of the Lothians. He is an accepted authority on trail riding at home and abroad. His previous books have been aimed principally at mountain biking, but the routes in this guide can be ridden on any type of bicycle, within reason!
