Bought this after reading about it in Q's Top 50 albums of the year way back when it was released. I was launching a magazine at the time and by the time it hit the stands all the team were completely, completely hooked. We never got bored with it, played it again and again and again and I'm sure it still holds really fond memories for all of them. Poor Eg, poor Alice - they created a total masterpiece and nobody's ever heard of either them or it. Wonderful for driving to in the dead of night. Mojo should do it as a Buried Treasure.

The second paragraph below I wrote back in 2001. Now almost 10 years later I'm still listening to this album. Rockets just came up on the iPod and I love it as much as ever. It's all been said more eloquently in the other reviews here, but apart from Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake, this is the only album I keep going back to years after its release. And it sounds nothing like either of them. But the elegaic, driving-at-night-in-the-rain sound of it all is wonderful, wistful, beautiful. A must have.

This is as good as music gets. It's as simple as that. Some beautiful lyrics, haunting sounds and great atmosphere. The 'whoooooooow' at the start of Indian is worth the money alone. Rockets is lovely too. Recommended to anyone who was ever into Nick Drake or Frazier Chorus, but in fact much more soul/jazzy than either. Eg's solo work is kinda sweet too.

I can't agree more with the comments of other reviewers. I bought this before going to university and the haunting melodies caught my attention straight away. It is the only album I have had for over 10 years that I still listen too - and indeed look forward to coming up on my i-Pod. There isn't a duff track on it and it is a tragedy that the duo haven't recorded anything else.

Eg-cellent
How to describe the sound of Eg and Alice? I would suggest it to be one part Blue Nile (plaintive vocals and urban themes) mixed with an equal measure of Steely Dan (glossy... Read more

I wholly endorse the other comments. I have this on cassette, and much as I love it, I am loathe to play it too much, as I don't want to wear it out. Read more
