I am an avid 24 fan and had this book delivered late yesterday afternoon. Having read some of the other literary efforts that have been written (by other authors) as 24 tie ins I had fairly low expectations but I was keen to know what Jack Bauer had been up to for the four years between Series 8 & 9. I managed to resist starting the book until about 7pm but from almost the first page I was completely engrossed in the story to the point I finished the book at 4am! - Work has been tough today! James Swallow is either a keen 24 fan himself or has gone to great lengths to research the character and Bauer's background so that the story is authentically 24. I notice at the end of the book Mr Swallow acknowledges Evan Katz & Manny Coto (24 TV Series writers) and the 24 wiki and 24 spoilers websites. The efforts made there have paid dividends Sir

At the bottom of page three 'A man in a torn, slate coloured sweatshirt emerged........' immediately takes you back to the closing shot from the Season 8 finale of Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) looking up at the camera and from that moment on, I was able to imagine Sutherland portraying the character as depicted in the book. This is no mean feat and certainly in my opinion not something that the other 24 books I have read have achieved. It could be said that Mr Swallow had an advantage as the character has developed over the 9 TV series and therefore he had more material to draw from than some of the other authors however, I think his job was harder as the character is far more multifaceted now.

I have intentionally avoided any spoilers in this review, everybody else deserves to get as much enjoyment out of this book as I have.
