Year of the cat and Time passages went platinum for Al. He had had moderate success with Zero she flies, and Love chronicles.
This , the next album after T.P. didn't do so well, though i can't see why. Featuring the band 'Shot in the dark' 24 carrots ( with a great cover that features 24 parrots all crossed out and replaced on the back by 24 carrots ) is very good. Running man , with a great piano intro and part generally opens the album, and is proceeded by Midnight Rocks and the delicate, Historical Merlins Time. Constantinople is a real rock song, and Mondo Sinistro is good for a laugh. The medly of two sea like songs is good, but my favourite track has to be Paint by numbers. Its very upbeat and half way through when the bass line really comes into its own ,and the music builds up from there is excellent. Optical Illusion is less good.
If you're unsure however all the best songs from this are available on the cd, centenary collection - the best of al stewart.

From beginning to end, this album has some of Al's best songs. It boasts 3 songs featured on his "best of" album, but those aren't the only highlights. Al gives a great history lesson in "Murmansk Run/Ellis Island" and even gets a little whimsical on "Mondo Sinistro". The five tracks that consist of the studio portion of his 1981 release "Indian Summer" are a great addition and are must haves. This album was his last one featuring the formula that gave him the hits "Year of the Cat", "On The Border" and "Time Passages".
Although he has the same formula here, Al does manage to attack songs more aggresively as evident in "Running Man" and "Constantinople". All in all, an outstanding effort.

Many of the CD's and downloads I purchase are replacements for LP's I bought years ago, this is another. It is one of Al Stewart's albums that has been played on a regular basis for over 30 years, and still sounds fresh, helped by the extra 5 tracks you get. If you are a fan - buy it while it's cheap - and save wear and tear on your old LP.

I had previously had this album on tape, so finding it to download was a relief as I had searched for the CD many times, I have alot of Al Stewart albums on CD now replacing my tapes that are very old, I do not know why this is not on disc as all the others are, this is a very good album which is worth the download at a good price.
