I was a little disappointed with "Forever". Not only did it take forever (boom, boom) to come out, but the tracks dragged on with lots of filler (like Demo 54 - not sure what that track was doing on the album!). The best tracks were with Earth's wonderful vocals - I really loved You'll Never Change, and Sweet Smoke. Fast forward to 2009 and Earth has left, her place taken by Daniel Agust (or rather he came back to reclaim his place). So what does Gusgus 2009 sound like? Well, in a word, fabulous, to my ears. I add that caveat at the end as this album will definitely polarise fans. It has much in common with T-World output pre Gusgus in that the songs run around 125bpm and are very analogue based. I don't like putting music into tiny genres, but I think that the word "minimal" might have been invented for the sparse arrangements on this disc - no lush string sounds here. Just ared down lean mean analogue heaven.
Album highlights are "Hateful", whose lyrics gain Gusgus their first "Parent Advisory" sticker, and "Take Me Baby", featuring Jimi Tenor. Daniel's vocals are sublime, as always, and his silky smooth voice act as a stark counterpart to the album's harsh techno environment.
Perhaps the intros and outros are a little too long. These songs could have been trimmed a little and maybe another song tacked on the end.
It has been a while since I have seen Gusgus live. The Gusgus live sound is truly amazing, and if there is a criticism to be levelled at this album (including the above), it would be that once again, the live Gusgus sound that I remember so well (and is excellently captured on the live rendition of Lust) does not shine through. Still, play this album often, and play this album loud, as it stands up to repeated listenings. Check out the video for Add this Song too - the arrangement of the song for the video is very good indeed and the video itself is, in my opinion, the best since Barry and Ladyshave, if not better due to its surreal drama. President Bongo gives a great dramatic turn in it!
