There's hope left! 26 Sep 2009
By Jay M VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
The return of Daniel Agust was a major turning point for Gus Gus, I felt they were a bit wayward without him and without being bad, Earth leaving is also a good move for the band. Their last album strayed far too close to mainstream house really. What appeals about Gus Gus is their creative electronica, madness and different appeal.

First thing to take into account, their debut album 'Polydistortion' was a magical place in time, they will never recreate it. For many of us Gus Gus fan's, it was the pinnacle, but we should always be open and is unfair of us to expect a recreation.

So, what of this new album? I'm more than happy. It's slimlined, polished with the typical Gus Gus elements such as a more creative techno-ish sound and incredible vocals from Daniel too. They've clearly also adapted to the sound of their German label, Kompakt. Reykjavik has always had a great techno scene and this goes along well with the etiquette and style of Kompakt.

As for the songs, 'Add This Song' is the main single, and builds and builds. 'Bremen Cowboys' is the only totally instrumental track but not boring by any means! 'Hateful' is a vicious verbal attack on an ex-lover, partner or friend, tied to a hard techno beat and is one of those songs that gives you power when you're in a bad mood! 'On The Job' is slightly wacky in the traditional Gus Gus style, it shows they haven't lost it!

The synth and keyboard work is minimal yet adds great depth to the songs. It will have you dancing, and if you're just listening to it home, twitching and nodding!

Overall, it's fantastic to see the boys from Reykjavik back and in such style too, in both sounds and vision, check the natty threads inside the album cover.

Add this album 15 Sep 2009
Format:Audio CD
I was a little disappointed with "Forever". Not only did it take forever (boom, boom) to come out, but the tracks dragged on with lots of filler (like Demo 54 - not sure what that track was doing on the album!). The best tracks were with Earth's wonderful vocals - I really loved You'll Never Change, and Sweet Smoke. Fast forward to 2009 and Earth has left, her place taken by Daniel Agust (or rather he came back to reclaim his place). So what does Gusgus 2009 sound like? Well, in a word, fabulous, to my ears. I add that caveat at the end as this album will definitely polarise fans. It has much in common with T-World output pre Gusgus in that the songs run around 125bpm and are very analogue based. I don't like putting music into tiny genres, but I think that the word "minimal" might have been invented for the sparse arrangements on this disc - no lush string sounds here. Just ared down lean mean analogue heaven.

Album highlights are "Hateful", whose lyrics gain Gusgus their first "Parent Advisory" sticker, and "Take Me Baby", featuring Jimi Tenor. Daniel's vocals are sublime, as always, and his silky smooth voice act as a stark counterpart to the album's harsh techno environment.

Perhaps the intros and outros are a little too long. These songs could have been trimmed a little and maybe another song tacked on the end.

It has been a while since I have seen Gusgus live. The Gusgus live sound is truly amazing, and if there is a criticism to be levelled at this album (including the above), it would be that once again, the live Gusgus sound that I remember so well (and is excellently captured on the live rendition of Lust) does not shine through. Still, play this album often, and play this album loud, as it stands up to repeated listenings. Check out the video for Add this Song too - the arrangement of the song for the video is very good indeed and the video itself is, in my opinion, the best since Barry and Ladyshave, if not better due to its surreal drama. President Bongo gives a great dramatic turn in it!

"24/7" is a mix of Gus Gus old and new. The real sign of the 'old' Gus Gus is the return of their original male vocalist. The 'new' is in the way they continue to develop their electronic sounds, drawing both on their older rockier attitudes and the colder, more fragile-sounding noises that could be heard on previous albums "Attention" and "Forever".

The result is an album that's brimming with confidence and style. Forgive the cliche but this isn't just cool, it's Icelandic ice-cold. It builds slowly, it twists and turns gradually but always brims with attitude. "On The Job" and "Add This Song", both over ten minutes long, are stripped-down electronic journeys.

A really bold, neat album.
