More About the Author

Helmut Newton (1920-2004) was one of the most influential photographers of all time. Born in Berlin, he arrived in Australia in 1940 and married June Brunell (a.k.a. Alice Springs) eight years later. He first achieved international fame in the 1970's while working principally for French Vogue, and his celebrity and influence grew over the decades. Newton preferred to shoot in streets or interiors, rather than studios. Controversial scenarios, bold lighting, and striking compositions came to form his signature look. In 1990 he was awarded the Grand Prix National for photography; in 1992 the German government awarded him Das Grosse Verdienstkreuz for services to German culture, and he was appointed Officer des Arts, Lettres et Sciences by S.A.S. Princess Caroline of Monaco. In 1996, he was appointed Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by Philippe Douste-Blazy, the French Minister of Culture at the time. Working and living in close companionship with his wife until his death at 83, his images remain as distinctive, seductive and orginal as ever.

Helmut Newton is a required taste. But like cavier and vintage champagne, once you acquire the taste you appreciate the finest be it food or art. I used to look at Helmut Newton's work from his earlier books such as Portraits and I didn't get it. The photographs seemed to me to be either "nice" pictures of celebraties ie Liz Taylor or perverted pictures of large nude women. But his style has a strange effect on you. Your fondness for the pictures grows, well it did in my case and you soon see the uniqueness of this guys artform. This may not be the first Helmut Newton book I would recommended to someone who hasn't seen his work but it is a classic. His images are timeless and in my eyes don't pander to those nice images you get from most other erotic photographers for the mass market. so if you want something different and sensual, Helmut Newton, can provide it.

If you're going to buy one book of Helmut Newton's photography, then this probably isn't going to be the one. The gold metallic cover is great, but I felt a bit underwhelmed once I opened the book. Not his most iconic photographs, not an overview of his career, nor his most interesting images. Don't get me wrong, it's still a good book, but I think I might save up for the 'Sumo' book instead.

This item has not yet arrived. I have tried to contact the seller via e-mail and still have not received a reply or the book. So i cannot rate this item as i have not yet received it. Communication and delivery are both terrible.

Growing up in the 60's with Hugh Hefner and Playboy, I was aware of the work of Helmut but only recently did I read his biography. I just had to have this book. It met and exceeded my expectations.

It's OK. Not the definitive Newton work. Better than nothing.
Just a another piece of the Newton puzzle.

Hugh Hefner is One of the Coldest Playa's on the Planet. the Cat always Kept it Gangsta.Much Props&Daps always to Hugh Hefner. this Book is On time.very artistic&Very Creative. the Ladies are Beautiful&Look fly. my only knock is that every once&in a while is that Hugh needs to Bring some More thick chicks into the Mix. but other than that this is a Tasteful&cool Visual. My Eye-sight after viewing this Book is Better than it has been in years.sexy Ladies always have been great for my eye-sight&Playboy has had plenty of them that have corrected any shortness of sight that I thought i was having. Props to Hugh Hefner&to the Photography of Mr.Helmut Newton. that is one of the Ultimate Jobs to have.
