About the Author

Jeremy Schmidt specializes in outdoor and historical subjects. His travels have taken him as far afield as Mongolia, China, Congo, and India, but he always finds his way home to Jackson, Wyoming. Thomas Schmidt is an expert on Lewis and Clark's Voyage of Discovery and has written extensively about the nature and history of the Rocky Mountain region. He lives in Bozeman, Montana. END ISBN: 079225371X COPY: A new guide in the critically acclaimed National Geographic Traveler series takes readers to one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in the United States: Alaska. A vast landscape of breathtaking beauty, natural wonder, and rich cultural history, Alaska is as unspoiled as it is unforgettable, and every year more visitors are discovering its unlimited vacation potential. It's the kind of place that's been a National Geographic specialty for over a century, so it is no surprise that this superbly illustrated guidebook, encompassing both natural history and the human presence from ancient native cultures to modern pioneers, is the last word on America's last frontier. The guide covers Southeast Alaska's Inside Passage; Anchorage; the Kenai Peninsula; the Southwest; Prince William Sound and Wrangell-St. Elias National Park; Denali National Park and the interior; and the spectacular Bush. Beautiful photographs and detailed maps deliver the visual impact that has become National Geographic's hallmark, and the fact-packed Travelwise sections provide all the essentials of getting to and finding your way around Alaska. END ISBN: 0792253728 COPY: A new guide in the critically acclaimed National Geographic Traveler series takes readers to Madrid, Spain's vibrant capital and one of Europe's most visited cities. Madrid buzzes with energy--from magnificent museums to lively art and music venues to sophisticated restaurants and bars--and there's no better way to discover this imperial capital than with this top-notch guide. You'll be taken to all the "must-see" attractions including the Museo del Prado and its masterpieces of European art; Las Ventas, the mecca of bullfighting; and the Royal Palace. But you'll also discover hidden gems, including Goya's tomb and the Rastro flea market. Beginning in Madrid's historic, bustling Plaza Major and working its way outward, the book explores the city's many architectural and cultural treasures. Beautiful photographs and detailed maps deliver the visual impact that has become National Geographic's hallmark, and the fact-packed Travelwise sections provide all the essentials of getting to and finding your way around Madrid. END ISBN: 0792241738 COPY: "Freedom Riders" compares and contrasts the childhoods of John Lewis, growing up in black America, and Jim Zwerg, growing up in white America, in a way that helps young readers understand the segregated experience of our nation's past. It shows how a common interest in justice created the convergent path that enabled these young men to meet as Freedom Riders on a bus journey south. No other book on the Freedom Riders has used such a personal perspective. These two young men, empowered by their successes in the Nashville student movement, were among those who volunteered to continue the Freedom Rides after violence in Anniston, Alabama, had left the original bus in flames with the riders injured and in retreat. Lewis and Zwerg joined the cause knowing their own fate could be equally harsh, if not worse. The historic journey they shared as Freedom Riders through the Deep South changed not only their own lives but our nation's history. AUTHOR BIO(S): Ann Bausum lives in Beloit, WI. Her most recent book for National Geographic, "With Courage & Cloth: Winning the Fight for a Woman's Right to Vote, " was given the 2005 Jane Addams Award, among many other honors.

HASH(0x8da8ac00) out of 5 stars A Good Road Guide. But Supplement for your Vacation 20 April 2007
By Fritz R. Ward - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
One of the great (probably apocryphal) stories about Yosemite concerned some tourists who asked a park ranger what to do if they had only one day in the parks. The ranger responded, "If I had only one day in Yosemite, I might sit down and cry." Unfortunately, schedules being what they are, many people only have a day or two to spend in Yosemite. As a result, they need to simply drive through and catch the highlights. If you fall into that category, don't cry, but do get this book. It lists some of the main features you will see on all the park roads and describes them in about a paragraph.

This book is organized with road maps on the left and route descriptions on the right. This leads to some unusual reading. For example, if driving from Yosemite Valley to Tioga Pass, you will read from the bottom of the right page up. The location notes literally follow the map up the page. The book also contains some nice "Nature Notes" which describe some of the more interesting plant and animal life along the roads. Careful readers will learn, for example, about the Pygmy Owl that routinely attacks rodents larger than itself and is occasionally carried along for quite a distance before it (sometimes) gets its meal. Finally, the book also contains wonderful panorama shots in black and white of various overlooks within Yosemite and identifies the main features of the view.

Although this book does what it sets out to do reasonably well, it has some problems. The maps for Yosemite Valley number the stops on the proposed auto tour, but the facing descriptions do not include the numbers. Other routes through the park (Tioga Pass, Glacier Point, Big Oak Flats Road, etc) either do not have the numbers or use them inconsistently. But the main concern is that this book is insufficient to plan a vacation around, even a short one. I would recommend supplementing this book with Ann Marie Brown's Moon Handbooks Yosemite, probably the best survey of lodging, dining and outdoor activities in and around the park. If you want to get out of your car and explore further, you should look to Suzanne Swedo's Best Easy Day Hikes Yosemite National Park (2cd edition) for short walks. If you have time for longer hikes, check out any of the Yosemite hiking guides by Jeffrey Schaffer. Still, if auto touring is your first or only choice, this is a nice book to enhance your vacation. Get it and have a good time in the best of America's national parks.

I ordered this product as a Christmas gift for my father about a week before Christmas. It did not give me an option to speed up the delivery process, so it came several days after X-mas. Maybe I did not read the description carefully but the book itself was much smaller than expected and the print was very small. I would not recommend this product (although it was cheap).
