I recently re-bought a copy of this as my friend didn't return it. Not surprised - as every home should have one! I genuinely think it's the best rock biog ever written. Rogan's a brilliant writer who has the seemingly unique ability to take a wide view of events yet always take us to the centre of the action and he's super hot on the music too. Every song the Byrds did is commented upon not merely by Rogan but all the members of the band. The interview comments and stories of the band's tempestuous career are amazing and forthright and the characterization of each Byrd is fair and balanced. Rogan actually began this work in the mid-70s and he keeps returning to it, which is why this massive hardback is so thorough and definitive. He doesn't just add new chapters but completely rewrites the entire book! I can't recall anyb other writer in this field ever doing this - particularly over such a long period. The intro suggests Rogan will still be poring over this epic on his death-bed. For Byrds fans and general readers of rock history this is a must!

A must have for any Byrds fan. The information is minute in detail but at no stage does this make the book a difficult read. Given the various line up changes of the band I was always curious as to why these changes took place. Everything is covered. Fantastic!

This is a fantastic story about how America's premiere folk-rock band was started.......David Crosby, Roger McGuinn and the rest of the band along with photographers, groupies, tour promoters etc.,take you on a fantastic psychedelic time-warp......Learn how Mr. Tambourine Man was given to The Byrds by Bob Dylan along with his blessing to record more of his material.....Learn about the many personnel changes within the group that eventually defined the "California-Rock" sound championed by The Eagles
