Book Description

24 April 2006
Featuring more than fifty major projects designed, commenced or completed in the last four years, "21st Century House" looks at diverse visions of the modern house and sets them in the context of the technological and aesthetic concerns of today's architects. Packed with illustrations and featuring detailed architectural drawings for every project, "21st Century House" covers all aspects of contemporary house architecture, from grand modernist pavilions to small urban schemes, including both the celebrated and the obscure. The book emphasises both pragmatic contemporary urban and rural architecture while also addressing the wider debates of social and environmental obligations in an examination of how the projects accommodate these increasingly important aspects of house building today.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit superficial 7 Feb 2008
Format:Hardcover
A coffe table review of some of the worlds contempoarary houses - some of which have been widely published before, others an interesting selection. As an architect the book was too superficial but could be more useful for non architects looking for inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars A focus on the home as a symbol of change and innovation 8 July 2006
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Jonathan Bell's book, 21st Century House offers up a focus on the home as a symbol of change and innovation, packing in hundreds of color photos of house interiors to prove his point. These photos don't limit themselves to the U.S. either, but cover homes around the world, with architectural writer Jonathan Bell choosing homes which reflect the latest design trends whether urban or rural. Affordable houses are the focus, too: a refreshing perspective in a sea of architecture books featuring mansions.
