Book Description

29 Sep 2011

A fond farewell to the many inanimate objects, cultural icons and general stuff around us that find themselves on the verge of extinction.

We’ve all heard of the list of endangered animals, but no one has ever pulled together a list of endangered inanimate objects.

Until now, that is.

Steve Stack has catalogued well over one hundred objects, traditions, cultural icons and, well, other stuff that is at risk of extinction.

Some of them have vanished already.

Cassette tapes, rotary dial phones, half-day closing, milk bottle deliveries, Concorde, handwritten letters, typewriters, countries that no longer exist, white dog poo…

…all these and many more are big a fond farewell in this nostalgic, and sometimes irreverent, trip down memory lane.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia Overload 10 Dec 2011
By Rachel Green VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
You really do have to be over thirty to get the most out of this book, though my fourteen-year old remembers some of them. I'm just shy of fifty and will admit I was unaware of some of the toys in here, but yes, I remember Sinclair Spectrums, sweet tobacco (it never encouraged me to smoke) and 8-track stereos. I still think snickers are Marathons, Starbursts are Opal Fruits and G00d God! My daughter tells me Bounty bars have changed their name now, too! I loved Texan bars and Old English Spangles, too.

This is a book to dip in and out of rather than a sit-and-read. Quite a trip down nostalgia lane.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant nostalgia 2 Feb 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
When my copy arrived I thought I'd just flick through it but ended up reading it from cover to cover. Brilliant, funny and nostalgic. So much "I remember those!", shows I'm getting old. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't show it to your husband. 1 April 2012
By C. King
Format:Hardcover
When going on holiday I offered this to my husband as his reading matter. He declined, he's not much of a reader. So I took it instead. The first night went like this:

Me: "Could I have my book back now?"
Him: "Yes of course. Oh my god, yes, ring pulls! Listen to this:" *reads extract*.
Me: "That's funny, so if I could just..."
Him: "Smarties tubes!"
Me: "Charlie, my book?"
Him: "Do you remember ice cream bricks?"
Me: *admits defeat & downloads something else for my kindle*

Moral of the story - don't show it to your husband.

This claims to be a personal view of obsolescence and it is just that, personal. There is an obvious lack of research and some of the information is just plain inaccurate. Read more

If you don't recognise the headline the content of the book is probably meaningless. An interesting collection from days gone by.

4.0 out of 5 stars very funny and nostalgic review of my childhood
An easy page turner, that had me saddened at the loss of innocent days growing up in the 70s and 80s.

Well written and a bit of light reading from my usual fodder. Read more

My wife dowloaded this for me as she thought I normally enjoy the pick up and put down type of book. This was just ok though, I didn't bother to go back to it.
