4.0 out of 5 stars A very comprehensive collection 17 April 2001
By A Customer
This is not a collection of well-known 'favourites'. It does contain works by highly celebrated composers (eg. Ravel, Prokoviev, and Stravinsky), but the only pleasure for a "hundred best tunes" listener will be Gershwin's popular 'Rhapsody in Blue'. But this is still a delightful compilation: Ravel's rarely performed concerto 'for left hand only' is delightfully contrasted by the Gershwin rhapsody before it, and the whole collection appears to have been put together with much musicality.

Fans of Gershwin will enjoy his piano concerto, but it has little of the energy found in 'Rhapsody in Blue'. Similarly, Stravinsky's piano concerto is rather disappointing. But these pieces help to give a full picture of music in the early twentieth century. The cover booklet is disappointingly succinct. The pieces are given no musical context and even short biographies of the composers (interesting to any listener) are missing. But the collection is full of little gems (like the third movement of the obscure de Falla's concerto and the Bartok).
