Fantastic Fox Film Music 30 Mar. 2011
By argytunes - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This was a late Christmas present (I received it in January of 2011), but it was certainly worth the wait. Many of the best film composers (under contract as well as freelance) made these films even better. From the opening 20th Century Fox music logo with cinemascope extension on CD #1, all 3 discs contain principle themes that were (previously) only available on individual soundtrack albums. Alfred Newman is a particular favorite of mine. Newman's musical versatility extended from light comedy to religious epics. Add selections by composers Bernard Herrmann, Alex North, John Williams and several others and you'll understand why this 3-CD set is such a pleasure to listen to. Here's a thought! If your CD player has a random selection or mix button on it, pop in one of the 3 CDs. Then see how many Fox Film Scores you can identify without checking the book that comes with the set? If you enjoy film music as much as I do, it's easy to hear why 20th CENTURY FOX: 75 years of Great Film Music is so FANTASTIC!

Sweeping collection 11 April 2013

When listening to "75 Years of Great Film Music" from 20th Century Fox, I expected scores from "Laura", "Cleopatra", "The French Connection" and other timeless classics. What I wasn't expecting were so many selections from lesser recognizable scores such as "Author! Author!", "Hoffa", "Night At The Museum" and the like. Not to say that they weren't welcome. In fact, often I thought I knew the which film from which the score had come and it became a game to guess it without consulting the CD listing. The only critical item that kept me from rating it 5-stars was that the order of some of the selections did not flow particularly well, a little jarring on occasion. With such a wide range of film genres and musical styles, I suppose it would be very difficult to do much more than what was presented. Otherwise, fine collection!

Awesome music, you will discover new favorites! 5 Oct. 2011

This 3-Disc set features 59 tracks, and gives you a good taste of the history of film music. This is a great way to own the most memorable cues from 59 films without having to buy each of the individual soundtracks. I was only familiar with about one-third of the featured movies/scores before I purchased this set, and now I have discovered many new tracks that I enjoy.

The CDs come in a case similar to a standard jewel case (but 2x as wide). It also comes with a 12-page booklet that while nice, is certainly nothing to write home about. I am not impressed with the packaging at all, and think something better should have been done for this great release.

This is a must-buy for fans of film music. But you might want to save a few dollars and purchase the MP3 version rather than the CD copy.

Strangely, one of the most famous Fox scores isn't represented here, Bernard Herrmann and Alfred Newman's collaboration on "The Egyptian." Much music from the "golden years" of film scoring has been ignored, favoring less scores from newer movies. I "get" that this is supposed to be an overview of 75 years of Fox film scoring but what it shows is a vast drop off in the quality of scores in the last three or four decades.

this is a CD set to have in your collection. However, be aware that many of the tracks are not main titles, etc. they are obscure tracks or like another reviewer put it "D-tracks". But it is enjoyable.
