5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Tool for Aspiring Authors 1 Oct. 2013
By Leigh Carrasco - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I've purchased this book for the past three years and this is by far the best yet! Chuck Sambuchino hits on current topics that inform and inspire beginning writers and illustrators and keep those already published up to date with the industry. In addition to the detailed information about agents and publishing houses, I especially appreciate the section on Self-Publishing Basics. It stresses the importance of legal issues and having a strong business plan in order to succeed. There is also a very helpful section on How to Create Your Own Platform. It breaks this daunting task down into manageable pieces. The author interviews are fantastic. There is something to learn from each one of their personal journeys to success. They made me laugh, cry, and know that we all have our own unique journey with no right or a wrong way. This guide sits beside my computer and will be used time and time again throughout the year.

It's no doubt a great book. No buyer's remorse here. However, much of the information is weighted to middle reader and young adult authors. I wish there was more info re picture books.

5.0 out of 5 stars this book is REQUIRED READING 18 Sept. 2013
By J. Larson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The 2014 CHILDREN'S WRITER'S & ILLUSTRATOR'S MARKET is like a universe where you'll find everything needed to publish any type of children's book. Once again, editor Chuck Sambuchino has put together an effective balance of "how to" articles by experts in the field, along with updated and exhaustive listings of all the best places to send your manuscript, including book and magazine publishers, agents and art representatives, even clubs, conferences, and contests. I used the 2013 edition, referring to it almost daily, and am amazed how the 2014 edition contains so much new info: articles on "voice," queries, social media, and how to create a writer platform. Especially inspiring are the interviews with debut authors of picture books, middle grade books, and TYA. But my favorite section is "New Agent Spotlights." This book has it all, and it really is required reading for anybody interested in writing and selling a children's book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an AMAZING resource! 18 Sept. 2013
By Rhonda - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I have been scouring the internet for over a year, looking for any and all information about publishing my middle grade manuscript and I'm so glad I got the 2014 Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market! It covers all aspects of the business of being a writer; I have been carrying it around with me the last several days, highlighting and marking pages. The articles are informative and instructive and because of the easy-to-use layout, I was quickly able to develop a list of agents and publishers to query, knowing that I would be putting my work in the hands of people most likely to be receptive. I mark this book as a must-have for any children's writer that aspires to be published!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Incredible Guide! 4 Oct. 2013
By Geraldine Lanier - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
If it weren't for this wonderful book I would've been at my wits end with my novel revisions and query planning by now. Instead of flipping through the pages and randomly selecting articles, as well as racing to the end of the book for the publishers and agents listings, I decided to read this entire guide from the beginning to the end. I'm so glad I did, not only because of the breadth of the inspiring interviews with noted authors, including Newbery winner Katherine Applegate and Goosebumps series storyteller R.L. Stine, but also because, for me, this methodical reading asserted the fact that children's book writers and illustrators, at any level and genre, are in the same boat.

We've all had to start from the bottom, dealing with topsy-turvy manuscripts or illustrations, disappointing rejections, and the uncertainty of a successful writing career. CWIM certainly puts all doubts and hopes into perspective with generous guidance from many in the field, including their articles about the importance of building a writer's platform, the ins and outs of social media, and even how to bring one's prose to life with convincing characters. Plus, success stories of debut authors, as well as the updated listings of magazines, publishers, art reps, and agents are just as helpful. All and all, a boost to one's writing spirits, especially during rough periods.

"Be patient and persistent. Love what you do, because there are no guarantees in this business, and there will be times when writing has to be its own reward," states fantasy novelist, Rachel Hartman in reference to the importance of revisions.

With those words in mind, 2014 CWIM brings all writers further in approaching the children's publishing industry with professionalism and the abilities to cope with whatever comes one's way. Thank you to editor Chuck Sambuchino for putting together another incredible guide! In addition, his Guide to Literary Agents blog (guidetoliteraryagents.com/blog) is a continuance of his support for writers, illustrators, agents, editors and many others in the field.
