Those who regularly visit my blog know that besides reading and travelling cooking and baking is my other passion. In my Sunday Treats on my blog I combine my love of reading with my love of desserts by sharing with you recipes of some of my favourite treats.

So when I heard that someone else did the same and even compiled a blogger's cookbook I was beyond excited and couldn't wait to see Christy Dorrity's selection. And it is wonderful!

The recipes are special and one of a kind enough to stand out of the more usual meals, but simple yet in both the ingredients and preparation as to not discourage you from trying them out at home. I love the creativity behind each of the recipes, how with a simple addition of an ingredient Christy Dorrity turns an ordinary recipe into something fancy and special.

While browsing through the cookbook I kept stopping and exclaiming "Mmm.. I want to try this one!" and "I want to bake this one!". It is a wonderful selection of a variety of creative and fresh recipes and I loved reading at each one of them the connection to the novel which inspired Christy and her personal retelling of the link between food and book.

One of my favourite recipes was the Fear-faire Lavendar Custard which is the treat accompanying Wings by Aprilynne Pike.

I love desserts and custard is a favourite of mine. Be it with apple pie or some other cake, I love it. And as we have a lavendar bush in our garden, I knew I had to try out this tasty and unorthodox combination.

In my opinion this upgraded custard is wonderful to have with pies and cakes just as you would use a normal one (so no need to freeze it, it is just as wonderful as a sauce). If you want to make the experience even more explosive taste-wise, sprinkle the lavendar custard with grilled walnut/hazelnut pieces on top of the cake. I guarantee it will be unforgettable!

Verdict: The 2011 Book Blogger's Cookbook is a wonderful and imaginative compilation of extraordinary yet easy to prepare recipes with an explanation of the link to a specific novel Christy Dorrity has read and reviewed. The 2011 Book Blogger's Cookbook is more than a mere cookbook. It contains review bits of 20 bloggers stating what they loved about the featured books. The blogger testaments make you want to read the novels and the photos make your mouth water. Perfect combination! My only complaint it that the 20 recipes aren't nearly enough, I want more! :-)

Content: 9/10
Cover: 10/10 - I am amazed at the professional and top quality look of the cover! It looks both professional and beautiful, and I love how both the reading and the delicious treats are included on it :-)

I recently became aware that this was available for the Kindle. My Kindle isn't available until after Santa brings it! but I downloaded the book and was able to read it via the iPad app made available by Amazon.

What a fantastic idea; I so wish I had thought of it!

The layout is clear and simple. Starting with a photograph of the book cover with the name of the author, then followed by a synopsis of the book. Next comes the recipe with photograph, inspired by the book and lastly a small list of what several bloggers said about the book with click able links to their respective blogs, which hosts their full reviews.

There are indexes of books, authors, contributing blogs and recipes which is great, as so many books of this sort don't bother with indexes and that is a pet hate of mine!

I have a couple of favourites - Rosemary and Lemon Roasted Chicken, which accompanies the book, Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. I also spotted a rather fun cozy mystery called Lemon Tart by Josi S Kilpack. Not too surprisingly, the accompanying recipe is for To Die For Lemon Tart!

This such a simple idea, yet a really enjoyable read, full of recipes to try, books to read and blogs to explore. Exactly what a book blogging cook needs! I loved this book and have signed up to take part in the 2012 edition.

My advice is sit with a cup of your favourite drink, a note pad and pencil and jot down the names of those books, recipes and blogs to visit.....I did!

Books, Reviews & Recipes, Oh My! 14 July 2011
By S. Jensen - Published on Amazon.com

When I first heard about Christy Dorrity's idea to compile a cookbook pairing mini-reviews of her favorite books with scrumptious, complementary recipes, I thought it sounded fabulous. When she mentioned using quotes from other book bloggers' reviews of the books as well, I thought it sounded even more fabulous. When she decided to use several snippets from yours truly, well, I could hardly contain myself. I found the concept so fun that I just could not wait to see how the project turned out. And, you know what? It was worth the wait because, really, the cookbook is quite fabulous.

The Book Blogger's Cookbook begins with an intro from Dorrity and a Foreword by self-publishing phenom Amanda Hocking. It goes on to showcase 20 books, most of which are YA paranormals. Several book blogger quotes are given for each novel, as well as a recipe inspired in some way by the story. Although I haven't had a chance to try any of the recipes yet, all look scrumptious and easy enough for even novice cooks. Dorrity offers a nice variety of foods to try, ranging from a refreshing fruit smoothie to a creamy, layered dip to rich, chocolatey brownies. You'll be salivating just looking at the gorgeous photos.

My only real complaint with the cookbook is that it's only available in a digital format. You may have noticed my aversion to e-books - I just don't like them! However, I did read the cookbook on my computer and, while it wasn't that bad, I really would have preferred a hardcover, spiral-bound book. That's not too much to ask for, right?

All in all, I enjoyed The Book Blogger's Cookbook, from its inception to its very sweet author to the beautiful finished product. So. Much. Fun. You should probably just zip on over to Amazon and order yourself a copy - for only $2.99, it's a total steal. It's a great resource for readers, book clubs, reviewers, etc. So, why are you still here? Click over to Amazon already!

Books and food--what could be better? 22 Jun 2011

We've all done it. Somewhere on your bookshelf--and mine--there is that one book that you devoured in one giant gulp. The book that fulfilled you body and soul. The book you just had to read out loud because the words tasted so good on your tongue.

You might not suspect it but The 2011 Book Blogger's Cookbook is such a book. It's a beautiful blend of a cookbook about books. It's worth reading straight through if only to find new books to add to your "to-read" shelf. It's worth savoring page by page if only to try all the new, easy-to-make recipes. The lineup is stellar (and I say that not just because I'm included in the list; I'm honored to be in such company) and the recipes are equally stellar. Main dishes, desserts, drinks--there's a little bit of everything in this cookbook. Each recipe is inspired by a specific book--mostly from the YA field--and the food ties into the story in some fashion. For example, the recipe for The Hourglass Door is "Time-stopping Chocolate Truffles." (Yum! I can't wait to try it out for myself.)

What a Neat Idea! 14 Feb 2012

A combination of my favorite things - books and recipes!

This is well-written and the photos are absolutely gorgeous. I am starving now. (Read on Kindle for PC - probably wouldn't look as pretty on the Kindle e-ink.) The books all sounded quite intriguing and I thought the recipe choices for each book were appropriate.

I did notice a couple of little things. One is that on some recipes, the ingredient list starts immediately below the picture on one page and goes to the next one. I missed the starting ingredients a couple of times when reading through. I noticed when reading the bread recipe that it is mixed and put into pans and left to rise; this is a bit unusual in my experience, but I'd give it a shot (especially if there's any chance I could get results like the loaf pictured).

The book is clean, hyperlinked, and very, very attractive. It is a pleasure to read from all aspects.

All in all, I got some ideas for my Wish List and some recipes I'd like to try. Good way to start my morning!!!
