This is, finally, pretty close to the original soundtrack to Kubrick's film, including the 'Overture'. Previous issues did not have the correct version of "Also sprach Zarathustra" - at the time, Decca were convinced that it would not do their street cred much good to be associated with the film and ensured that Karajan's name did not appear in the end title credits. Subsequently, a different verion of the piece appeared on the first issues of this album (which is included here as a bonus track, for those who are interested).

Almost everything else is as you would wish it. The transfer is good, but some of the reprises of pieces are missing and - although the correct edit of the first section of "The Blue Danube" is used - to cover Floyd's journey to the space station - the second part - completing his journey to the moon - is missing. We don't hear the end of "The Blue Danube" until the segment for the end titles, and (for better or worse) this does not feature the clumsy edit used in the film.

Fine music from one of the greatest films ever made - with a bonus track of most of HAL's dialogue!

Turn down the lights, turn up the volume and revel in the dramatic music.

Alternatively, get 2001 - A Space Odyssey [Blu-ray][Region Free] and do the same!

This is the edition to have. Everything as it should be regarding presentation and recording with a few extras thrown in. I must agree with the other reviewer in that this music is best heard along with the visual element although my reason for buying this was that it's simply the cheapest option to acquire the pieces by Ligeti and Kachaturian, a one-stop-shop if you will.

The soundtrack to 2001: A Space Odyssey is an iconic example of how music is used to evoke emotion in the cinema. If you cannot recognise the lead pieces you will be identified as an alien, incarcerated and tests performed upon you.
This album provides good reproduction of the original score and is worth listening to.
We hope you enjoy your stay and do not bring mass carnage and genocide.

Cant see why that the original soundtrack took so long to release Blue Danube certainly sounds better on this than the other release it seem to have more "UMPH"

I have the original version of the soundtrack on vinyl, but this is suffering the effects of time. This version is outstanding. The additional tracks and the booklet, give more insight in to this amazing film. If you love the film, get this soundtrack. I play it load for full effect. Highly recommended.

I saw 2001 when it first came out, wore out the audit vinyl and cassette copies and the VHS tape, have two versions ofit on DVD - and finally got round to a CD. Simply the best and most thought-provoking science fiction of all

Kubrick's choice of music for his film masterpiece perfectly complements the storyline, combining previously unfamiliar works with the originality of the story in ways that have made both the film and music cult classics
