BBC Review

It's invariably true that all of the groundbreaking science fiction films have also come fully-furnished for galactic exploration with a brilliant soundtrack. Forbidden Planet, Barbarella, Bladerunner, even -dare we say it for fear of seeming a little too populist? -Star Wars. From whooping theremins to massed strings and synths, music furnishes our future dreams. Top of any list for sheer memorability is 2001. Arthur C's ruminations on the nature of God were always going to require more than a couple of french horns and someone banging on a kettle drum. But Stanley Kubrick showed just as much genius by collecting together these moments of transcendency as by dressing men up as monkeys and getting away with it.

It was never meant to be this way. Kubrick hired film composer of note Alex North (A Streetcar Named Desire, Death Of A Salesman) to score the movie but in assembling the rough edits he had been using the tracks we now associate with the film. North knew he could never compete with Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra" and retired gracefully. Kubrick had already done the job. Some of this music is now inextricably linked to the images it accompanied; the "Blue Danube" turning a spacecraft's orbit into a languid ballet, the grandeur of the planetary alignment which heralds the ''Main Title''; but to hear it alone still stirs emotion.

Aside from the obvious, the bulk of the collection is mainly taken up with far more challenging stuff. The theme of dance was furthered by the use of Khachaturian's "Gayane Ballet Suite", mirroring the flight of the Discovery, its ill-fated crew and one whacked-out computer. Meanwhile the really heavy stuff is saved for the moments of revelation. Big black monoliths deserve big black music and Gyorgi Ligeti's work didn't come any grander or more sombre. His "Requiem For Soprano, Mezzo Soprano, Two Mixed Choirs And Orchestra" is frankly going to give anyone the heeby jeebies, but the angelic preface to "Lux Aeterna" and peripheral sound collage of "Adventures" (for which Ligeti sued Kubrick over subtle alterations) still admirably convey the, well, otherworldliness of it all.

Add to this some of the music left over from the original soundtrack and a full 9 minutes plus of Hal 9000 getting his chips gradually unravelled and you've got yourself a night in with the cosmos. What are you doing Dave? --Chris Jones

This is, finally, pretty close to the original soundtrack to Kubrick's film, including the 'Overture'. Previous issues did not have the correct version of "Also sprach Zarathustra" - at the time, Decca were convinced that it would not do their street cred much good to be associated with the film and ensured that Karajan's name did not appear in the end title credits. Subsequently, a different verion of the piece appeared on the first issues of this album (which is included here as a bonus track, for those who are interested).

Almost everything else is as you would wish it. The transfer is good, but some of the reprises of pieces are missing and - although the correct edit of the first section of "The Blue Danube" is used - to cover Floyd's journey to the space station - the second part - completing his journey to the moon - is missing. We don't hear the end of "The Blue Danube" until the segment for the end titles, and (for better or worse) this does not feature the clumsy edit used in the film.

Fine music from one of the greatest films ever made - with a bonus track of most of HAL's dialogue!

Turn down the lights, turn up the volume and revel in the dramatic music.

Alternatively, get 2001 - A Space Odyssey [Blu-ray][Region Free] and do the same!

This CD was everything I was expecting. It was a used copy so the case was a little worn but the cd itself played well, no scratches. It was perfect. I enjoyed the Hal 9000 collage. The extra track of the distorted "Adventures" that was not used in the film was a little strange but interesting. I will probably not listen to that one much. All of this music is strange but I've seen the movie so many times, I'm used to it and it sort of grows on you. Abstract music is never very pleasant the first time you hear it although these pieces seemed to fit well with the images in the movie. I really like the ethereral sound of Lux Aeterna. It fits well with the moonscape footage. Atmospheres has that feeling of moving faster than light. The Requiem just sounds alien. I've always loved the Gayane Ballet Suite. It sounds so lonely and expansive, like a person walking through a totally deserted city. Of course, the Blue Danube is just perfect for the waltz of the spaceships. And what can I say about Zarathustra? Inspired. The music is a huge part of the ambience of this movie and it's hard to imagine what it would've been like without it or with different works.
