This is Billy's first release since his Greatest Hits vol3 album some years ago and 7 years since his last studio album River of Dreams. This live album features material spanning the width of his recordings as well as more recent stuff like River of Dreams and I go to extremes. However it is the older stuff and less well known material that really holds the album together. Joel's hardcore fans will already have appreciated tracks such as Summer Highland Falls and The Ballad of Billy the Kid and will appreciate the enthusiasum he puts into the live performance. To people only really familiar with Uptown Girl etc it is a worthy purchase and an opportunity to hear tracks that really should be more well known. Tracks like Scenes From an Italian Reataurant and I 've loved these days really do need to be heard. Unfortunately not everything is perfect, the version of River of Dreams is simply appauling and really doesn't reflect Billy's true live abilities. Billy does tend to babble a little, its fine the first time around but is tiresome from there on. Apparently Billy did 36 tracks at his concert and I think it is a shame that songs were omitted (no Pianoman!). One particularly poinant part of this disc is the song 2000 years from The River of Dreams CD played just before midnight. It would have really have been a treat to have been there at the time. Some of that special sort of atmosphere is reflected in the recording making it more than just a live offering of Billy's songs. If you're a Billy Joel fan buy the disc (if you haven't already) and if your not its a good value Billy Joel disc to buy but The Stranger or Turnstiles would be a more accurate reflection of Billy's talent.

As with any live album the question with Billy Joel's Millennium Concert is what does he offer up this go around that we have not heard before. Most of what is here is pretty much high energy performance of old hits, such as "You May Be Right," backed up by a larger horn ensemble and backing vocalists than we remember from the originals. There are only two covers, "Dance To The Music" (originally by Sly Stone, not Shrek, people) and the Stones's "Honky Tonk Women," and neither one of them goes off in a substantially different direction than the originals. Your ability to enjoy the classic piano pieces he scatters throughout the performance is probably going to be based mainly on your ability to recognize them (I aced the test). Using one as a segue to "Prelude/Angry Young Man" was a nice touch but the bookend effect of starting with Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and ending with "This Night" and its incorporation of a Beethoven theme was a tad obvious (besides, every time I hear the "Ode to Joy" now I think the Olympics are over). It was nice to hear one of his better oldies in "The Ballad of Billy The Kid," which evinces some of the production values whipped up for the concert, as well as personal favorites like "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant." Too bad you cannot jettison Joel's patter, because one hearing is enough, but at least it mostly comes at the end of the tracks so you can just bounce ahead to the next song. If you have more than a couple of Billy Joel albums in your music collection, then "The Millennium Concert" is worth catching. There should be a pretty high correlation between the number of CDs you already have and your willingness to add this one.

A brilliant comeback 1 April 2001

Even though there has been no new material from Billy since River Of Dreams in '93, this CD shows that Billy is in the best form he's been in since (in my opinion) Storm Front and the recording of the track Light As The Breeze a little while after. The show on CD itself works well and you do get the feel of what it was like to be there. The inclusion of Billy talking to the audience in his true New York style and the noise of all the party poppers at the magical 12:00 moment helps this. The tracks in the show are a good spread of Billy's 28 year catalogue including some lesser known Billy classics and the live arrangments are brilliant shoiwing the tracks off to the best light. All in all a brilliant double ablum which I hope will spark some new material from the main man.
