Book Description

People are becoming more aware of what they eat and want to eat healthy food: sales of Sainbury's high-fat ready meals such as chicken madras have fallen 40% since it started its nutritional labelling scheme. Consequentially, sales of lower-fat foods such as Spinach and Ricotta Cannelloni and Carrot and Coriander Soup from Sainbury's Be Good to Yourself range are up by 142% and 123% respectively.

Good recipes but disappointed that there is no nutritional value to each recipe. Not as good as the Good Food books.

This contains some nice recipes, such as spicy goan aubergine curry. I mostly found it quite uninspiring though, with stuff that I could think up better myself. One of the photos, notionally of 'chickpea and tomato casserole' looks more like a baked potato with chickpeas poured in the middle. And the recipe for risotto is odd, with the parmesan added at the end ... so it can't be absorbed by the rice (?).

Split into sections with themes such as desserts, everyday dishes etc, this is another excellent production in what is effectively a pocket book guide collection from Hamlyn.

Recipes are easy to follow and aredishes that can be considered relatively easily prayed, even for a novice cook.

Instructions are clear and concise and, all in all, I can recommend it without hesitation.

**Update**

Cara Hobday DOES write a superb introduction to this book, encouraging a change of attitudes towards fatty foods and giving solid nutritional advice. But the recipes themselves completely contradict this advice!

Just 5 recipes into the book and we've consumed Peanut Butter, Butter and Coconut Milk! How 'Low fat' is that, Eh?

And your Penne with Roasted Tomatoes is not a complicated-sounding dish. I expect we could all manage that one without any fatty ingredients. But not Cara -she whops in OLIVE OIL, CREME FRAICHE, RICOTTA and PARMESAN!! I trick you not! Excuse me, but is this not exactly the OPPOSITE of 'low fat'? eg. Taking a traditionally low-fat dish and packing it with saturated gunk! What is she thinking?

I grant that it is oft suggested throughout the book to use 'low fat' variants of ingredients like 'half fat cheddar' but do consider that, at 30% fat, cheddar cheese still does not qualify as low fat in its half fat variant of 15% fat. Not in my book, anyway; I'm looking at anything under 2% to qualify as low fat, frankly.

This book could have been called 'low-ER fat' dishes instead of low fat dishes. Unless it was qualified with nutritional breakdowns of each recipe which it is not. Fat chance!

Some dishes here do look tasty and one or two look genuinely healthy but the bewildering inclusion of saturates in a book of this title is lunacy.

I don't eat meat, which I should have thought about before getting this book. But looking at the veggie dishes, the author seems to have fallen into the trap of using eggs and cheese to substitute for meat. Not very healthy really.

Excellent series of cook books. Mostly simple straightforward recipes that sound good and look great in the photo's.

The book is actually 100 recipes with a variation of each, giving 200. For example, monkfish with beans and pesto's variation is scallops with green beans and pesto, and it's as simple swapping the monkfish and beans for scallops wrapped in Parma ham and green beans, the rest is the same. Not all variations are that simple, but small changes can create a very different end result.

Prep times are given and range from 5 to 30 mins, most being around 10-15 mins. The low fat nature of the dishes isn't overly apparent and it more or less just reads as a nice simple cook book with exciting recipes, mostly on the rustic side. Very few, impossible `chefs only' dishes.

Sections are everyday (28 pages), quick (40 pages), something special (38 pages), vegetarian (40 pages), salads (38 pages) and deserts (38 pages).

Great book at a bargain price.

If you are looking for ways to reduce the fat in your diet, this is a nice little recipe book, packed with 200 low fat recipes, laid out in an easy to read format, with nice, appetising photographs of the dishes you can make. The ingredient lists for recipes are not excessive and easy to obtain and most of the recipes are designed to serve four people. The recipes however, do not have a calorie count per serving. This is more a collection of recipes for healthy eating, not just calorie counting.

I have several cookery books in this series and I'm always impressed by how much they manage to pack into something so small. Presentation is great, lots of photos, the recipes and methods are laid out in a way that's both clear and easy to follow. Ingredients are easy to source, and to handle, a few of the recipes are challenging enough to keep an experienced cook interested. If you're a vegetarian then you won't be disappointed. Good selection of dishes arranged in different sections for ease of use and it's not at all boring with a decent range of plain, spicy, sweet, hot and cold food on offer. However; there's no nutritional information with the recipes and I just don't understand how they could have missed that out in a book with "Low Fat" in it's title. Seems like a glaring ommission to me. They do give a breakdown of the different types of fat and why some are good and some are bad but that's it.....you won't know how much of each you've eaten or what proportion of your daily fat intake is included in the food. That's why I've only gone for three stars.
