More About the Author

I first started writing Halogen Oven cookbooks back in 2007. My first book Halogen Heaven was a great success and led to a 3 book deal with the publishers Hamlyn and eventually to a number of other successful Halogen Oven cookbooks for Halogen Oven Manufacturers.

Since then I've written many more Halogen Oven recipe books, with a new series called THE HALOGEN OVEN COOKBOOK series currently on sale.

I also write books for Slow Cookers, Soup Makers and Tagines.

In my spare time I spend time with my family and my beloved camera in a small village in Yorkshire.

Visit my website and blog http://www.maryannemadden.com to keep up to date with all new releases, the occasional recipe and lots of stories from my kitchen.

Book Description

Using both halogen and infra red heating, halogen ovens dramatically cut cooking time by up to 40% and also use less power than a conventional oven. They do everything in one pot - from boiling and roasting to toasting and baking cakes. The ovens even help with the washing up as they have a self-cleaning function. Halogen Cooking is becoming increasingly popular, with JML listing the halogen oven as their bestselling product. Part of the bestselling Hamlyn All Colour 200 series.

A good friend purchased a halogen oven for me for Christmas after her husband bought one for her. After a few very successful attempts using the recipes in the manual that came with it I was looking for a book that would take me further. There was almost nothing - and those books that were available didn't have much in the way of photographs (which I find hugely valuable when trying new techniques). There was even very little on the web.

This book is the first that I have used which actually works for me. The introduction provides a coherent explanation of halogen ovens, how they can be used and what they should be used for. Following the introduction the sections are: chicken, beef, pork, lamb, seafood, vegetarian, pizza & pasta, on the side, breads & baking and desserts & puddings. Each of the 200 recipes is accompanied by a full page photograph. The recipes are well presented, with a list of ingredients and blow by blow instructions, numbers the meal will serve and estimated cooking times. There is an index at the end.

The book doesn't pretend that you can do everything in the halogen oven, anymore than you could in a conventional oven and therefore includes extra instructions for sauces and vegetables that need to be done on the hob. For me, the best feature of the book (apart from the photos) is that the recipes offer a huge range of different styles of food and presentation.

3.0 out of 5 stars The biggest problem.... 25 Jan 2012
So you've just bought your first halogen oven - and now you need to know how to cook with it. Where this book - and all the others fall down is - they don't really tell you how to use it. They don't tell you what temperature settings to use for everyday stuff - or how long to put it in for. They don't really tell you how to use the low rack or the high rack. The recipes are fine - but first you have to know the basics - how long - how hot - and where to position stuff. Don't buy - if you want to learn the basic - hands on stuff - none of these books are for you - keep looking. One day the penny will drop with authors - and somebody will write the book you really need.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good basic starter cookbook 10 July 2011
A wide range of recipes given in both metric and imperial. Some of the ingredients are quite expensive. A recipe with alternative ingredients is given at the bottom of each page, which effectively doubles the choices. Only downside was many recipes called for items to be cooked on the hob or fried before using the halogen oven, not very helpful if you do not have a traditonal stove.

This is an excellent little book and is far superior to the one supplied with the cooker. Excellent value and quick delivery. Thanks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value 15 Nov 2010

There is a shortage of recipe books for halogen ovens and this is one of the best, although almost pocket size it is one of the excellent Hamlyn 200 recipes books. The title states the author is Maryanne Madden but she is not mentioned in the actual book. As well as the 200 recipes all with full page illustrations of how the dish should turn out there are useful tips and advice on using halogen ovens. The recipes are arranged in food order and consist of sections on Chicken, Beef, Pork, Lamb, Seafood, Vegetarian, Pizza & Pasta, On the side (vegetables), Breads & Baking and finally desserts & Puddings.
With all of these receipts there should be something for everyone, there is also an index if you can't find things by thumbing through. Each recipe has detailed instructions including preparation and cooking time it also gives quantities in both metric and imperial measurements.
I particularly liked the Chilli-spiced meatballs, the recipes for various stews worked well but I prefer these cooked in a slow cooker but with the halogen you can have a beef & barley stew with a cooking time of 55 minutes as opposed to about 8hrs with a slow cooker

At its Amazon price, any criticism is really nit-picking. The title is classically Hamlyn, extensively illustrated, one recipe per side which does mean that the title is slightly misleading in that there are only 240 pages including Index and Introduction which, discounting the illustrations can leave room for fewer than 120 recipes rather than the 200 promised. However, I had failed to notice that most, if not all recipes, have a variation contained within the final paragraph or two. If you include the variations, then the '200 **** recipes' of the various titles is probably understated. I had spotted the variations in another volume of the series only after using one of its recipes and reviewing a couple of the titles.

The recipes are broken down into broad groups, some according to the main ingredient e.g. lamb, beef and fish-based ones all with their own sections although others are classed by the type of dish. The book covers just about everything from starters, mains, desserts and breads. The Introduction does provide some hints and tips, but obviously of a rather general nature and not specific to a certain brand or model. Operationally, the various models are quite similar and it does not matter what the capacity, whether the timer is digital or clockwork, there is a digital readout or not, or there is a stand for the lid. You add the ingredients, pre-prepared or mixed as needed, set the temperature and time, close the lid and switch it on. The machine does the rest. You will need to clean the bowl afterwards and you may need to wipe splashes from the lid, but that is basically all there is to it.

Most of the recipes are designed for 4, some for 6 and possibly others for 8 or more, but I did not check out every one.
