Truly one of the greatest South African bands ever to grace this earth! Had it not been for the ban against South African musicians in the 70's and 80's, Clout would most likely have become a major international success. This album encompasses titles from both of Clout's first two albums. It begins with their signatory favourite, "Substitute" - a major #1 hit in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, Holland, Sweden, Austria, Denmark and Belgium. Entering the British charts at #2 (where it remained for 3 weeks), it never quite reached the coveted #1 position, which had been occupied by Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta's "You're The One That I Want". A major success in Europe, Clout scored many more Top 10 singles, notably "Save Me" (a hit in South Africa, Germany, France and Holland), "You've Got All of Me" and "Under Fire". Interestingly, "Substitute" was also an A-side cover for Gloria Gaynor, reaching #89 on the US Billboard Charts (Clout's version reached #51). One day, a 'creative' DJ decided to flip Gaynor's single to reveal the B-side - a song which went on to become one of the biggest sellers of the 70's, viz. "I Will Survive". This album combines a 70's synthetic feel with that of hard rock, a combination which separated Clout from the disco euphoria. Their international success, which is yet to be matched in its totality, serves to remind us of what Southern African musicians can achieve. This album, comprising 20 hits from 1978 through 1981, is truly grand.

Best known for their Europe-wide smash hit Substitute, Clout were a group of five very talented singers and musicians from South Africa. They began as a seventies disco group but later added a hard rock edge to their music.
In Britain, Substitute was their only hit, peaking at number two, although they fared better in mainland Europe, where Substitute reached number one in several countries and they had other chart hits too. Substitute was also recorded by Gloria Gaynor and released as a single in America. I will survive was on the B-side but the single was soon flipped, as a result of which Substitute was only a minor hit for her. This enabled Clout's version to become an American hit but it, too, was only a minor hit although it peaked higher than Gloria's version. Incidentally, the liner notes claim that the Righteous Brothers were the original performers of Substitute but I've never come across their version.
Clout recorded several covers of songs that you might recognize including Eric Clapton's Let it grow. Clodagh Rodgers recorded the original version of Save me but it failed to chart in Britain despite plenty of airplay. Whether Clout's version was released in the UK as a single, I don't know, but it was a hit in some other countries, as were You've got all of me and Under fire.
This fine compilation covering the period from 1978 to 1981 contains all the essentials and much more besides. If you enjoy seventies disco music, you should enjoy this.

I bought this because I heard Substitute on the radio and remembered how much I liked it. I must have been about 7 last time I heard it! Ah, the joys of internet shopping! The rest of the album is utter, utter rubbish, but Substitute is a winner. Sad to think they built an entire career out of it. I heard Ginger Spice was going to release a cover of it soon.

I can agree with the review above. I had a collection by Clout on a cassette. I can only remember "Substitute", "Feel My Need" and "Miss America" but every track was good and the cassette gave me a lot of entertainment. It's rock music with melody, and far better than more famous female rock groups and "artists".

Haven't heard the Clout version but have the original by The Righteous Bros. It's vintage R B and well worth the listen if you can find it.
