Essential Stenhammar 2 Mar 2000
By J Scott Morrison - Published on Amazon.com
These CDs are Järvi's second recordings of most of the orchestral music of Stenhammar. And they are marginally better than the earlier performances. Stenhammar is unjustly neglected outside Sweden and that's a shame. He's a major composer, perhaps the best ever from Sweden. One can hear his style evolve if one hears the music in chronological order, moving from Brucknerian, to Sibelian, to Stenhammarian in a period of a few years. I pull these recordings off the shelf frequently. You will, too.
Amazing music from a neglected composer 14 Dec 2009
By Camil Moujaber - Published on Amazon.com
Just got this set a few days ago (from a different source). The sonics on Symphony no.1 are very good to excellent for an AAD (analogue/analogue/digital) recording, highs are clean and there is no hiss, which is characteristic of AAD and ADD recordings, the sound engineers did a super job. The rest of the works in this set were digitally recorded, so you can imagine the excellent sound quality to be had. As far as the music is concerned, this is late romantic and melodious music, and there's nothing to frighten the horses. These are neglected works that should have been part of the mainstream classical repertoire, no questions asked. Have a listen to the 3rd movement of Lodelezzi Sings, Op. 39, if you don't get goose bumps or start dreaming of a far away land, then you should consult your doctor. If you like late romantic and melodious classical music, and appreciate the works of Grieg, Alfven and Sibelius, to name a few, you'll be doing your ears and senses a great favor by purchasing and listening often to these works. Highly recomended!

MOST STENHAMMAR FOR THE DOLLAR 25 Jun 2003
By Duane E. Crawford - Published on Amazon.com
I should write a terrible review because on re-listening to Symphony No. 1 in F, I don't really want to part with this fabulous Swede. I have three music sources that praise his symphonies and concertos. Neeme and Paavo Jarvi are conductors I buy. Cristina Ortiz is a very credible Cristina in Piano Concerto No. 2. Reviewers only think of him as influenced by other composers. He has his own musical strengths. There are many smaller CD sets available, but this is a buy. Sure there wasn't much movement in the movements. 1. tempo tranquillo-allergro was pretty much like 4. allegro non tanto, ma con fuoco tranquillo. Allegro Amabile might as well have been called Allegro Amiable. It was all rather soothing and reassuring.
