5.0 out of 5 stars Joyful Pleasures 15 Jun 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Astonishingly good debut that is influenced strongly by 80s post punk and early 90s shoegazer bands. Stand out tracks are previous singles & EPs; Scarlet, You're Early and Creeping however the quality and consistency of the music is maintained across all 10 tracks of the album.

To my ears there is a strong Joy Division influence which is most noticeable on Creeping, Sugar and Circuitry. The latter track to me sounds like it could have been lifted straight off Unknown Pleasures. Despite this the music on 2:54 is not as stark/bleak as that would suggest but strangely positive and uplifting no doubt helped by the haunting female vocals.

Other obvious influences on the band's sound presumably include Siouxsie & the Banshees, Curve & Elastica (notably all post punk bands with female vocalists). However the style of the vocals would seem to be also inspired by the folk/rock of All About Eve and Clannad which is most apparent on Ride. The combination of harmonic female vocals and stacatto guitar riffs or grungey shoegazer style strumming is one that works well. Scarlet is a song that demands to be replayed over and over which is the signature of any truly great song.

Despite some clear references the songwriting is original and considerable attention has been paid to crafting each individual track. I am sure that this album will remain on my playlist for sometime to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect if you enjoy female fronted bands. 10 Nov 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
After enjoying artists like Warpaint, Esben and the Witch, Grimes, Sleater-Kinney and Blood Red Shoes, I was hoping to find another female fronted band that fell into this type of genre.

I came across 2:54 purely through a similar artists recommendation on Amazon and I owe most of this past months listening to that recommendation.

2:54 are a British Warpaint, i'm sure they don't want the comparisons but if you enjoy Warpaint, you will adore 2:54 but with that said, there is no sense of plagiarism here at all.
The haunting female melodic vocals and somber dreamy riffs are aural perfection and more often than not you will listen with goosebumps throughout your body.

Vocalist Colette Thurlow sounds like a less damaged PJ Harvey mixed with the a defeated Melissa Auf der Maur and a tender Shirley Manson but I think Thurlows vocals are without influence and at times incomparable.

The album is so cheap at the moment, i highly recommend purchasing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite 9 Jun 2012
Format:Vinyl|Amazon Verified Purchase
Very very fortunately managed to find 2:54 (with the help of a youtube add!) before their 7 June London date at which they, like their album, were absolutely awesome. The album is breathtakingly good and I will not attempt to review beyond strongly suggesting you listen for yourself (they have vids on youtube) and no doubt you'll be after their tickets soon enough.

The vinyl is good quality and I would expect it to age well; a 320 Kbps mp3 digital download code is included for your iPod (if only all vinyl's were published so conscientiously!).

3.0 out of 5 stars Promising, but Joy Division? Oh dear. 30 Jan 2013
By Klausk
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I heard this band through recommendations and indeed these reviews. I have to say firstly that this group sound nothing like Joy Division..at all - other than they play guitar bass and drums. People are so careless with the way they pigeon-hole groups. To be fair to 2:45 this lazy line of, alleged, similarity, will probably hinder them rather than help them. Joy Division were an extremely unique intense and powerful band. However even they had to put up with accusations that they sounded like the Doors! Apart from Curtis' singing, the subject matter and music were completely different, which history has proved correct of course.

As for this cd and 2:45; I like it. Its breezy and poppy, but with some hidden mystery. The singer is good, very breathy vocals and quite an attractive girl too. As a debut release, it shows promise, but please don't hold them back with convenient and frankly baffling pigeon holing...let the band develop by themselves, succeed on their own merits.

I,for one, wish 2:45 good luck, they're going to need it these days, where challenging, inventive, and possibly original new groups are very thin on the ground indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars New talent (how refreshing) 30 Jan 2013
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This album is a really fine debut, the sound is brooding and sexy, the vocals smoulder and the guitars soar, this really is a fine piece of work. Comparable to a whole range of old bands; Siouxsie, Bat for Lashes, Kate Bush and others. Kinda dark in a sensual way, one for really listening to at night to really capture the mood. Restores hope to me that there are still genuine alternative bands out there, I look forward to more!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great "noise pop" album 9 Dec 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I absolutely love this band and the whole album is amazing. Their music reminds me of the uk noise pop wave from the mid 90's-early 2000's with quite a dark (melancholic) and melodic edge.
