Book Description

As Jesus is about to enter into eighteen years of obscurity, Luke gives us only one clue as to His preoccupation during those years, informing us, “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.” (Luke 2:52)

The temptation is to think that Jesus grew “naturally” in these areas, but the verse implies that Jesus grew intentionally and deliberately. Jesus grew on purpose. It is tempting only to examine Jesus’ miracle-laden ministry, His teaching, His death and resurrection – to look forward at what is about to happen, not look back at what has been. For approximately 3 years Jesus impacted His world, but these 3 years represent only 9% of His life on earth. What about the other 91%?

These silent years of Jesus undoubtedly formed the foundation for the 9%. This is where Jesus grew. Every follower of Jesus and any person who seriously desires to take up the mantle of leading others must also learn to lead themselves. Even though Jesus was God in flesh, He intentionally grew intellectually, physically, spiritually and relationally. If Jesus grew, so should we. Contained with 2:52 lies the blueprint of learning to grow on purpose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pearls of Wisdom! 3 Jan. 2013
By Samsam
Let me review this book with just a few of the life changing quotes I have taken away from it...

'In any sphere of life, in order to "become" we need a "because". If out because is strong enough, the becoming is inevitable; not a case of "if", but "when"!'

'To have authority one must submit to authority'

'If we cannot lead ourselves in a vibrant spirituality, we'll struggle to authentically lead others.'

'When we humble ourselves, we're not making ourselves less than we are, but in a particular context we've chosen to make ourselves smaller in order to serve a greater purpose.'

.. this book is life changing, filled with wisdom, knowledge and insights that will blow your mind! Just have a read!

4.0 out of 5 stars the overflow of a life on purpose.... 16 April 2013
The intention of Jesus was clear. He set His face like a flint. He was purposeful in living as a son beloved of His Father. This is a deep though brief study into the brilliant obscurity of Jesus unseen years. Focused on Luke 2 v 52 the reader is invited to navigate the two polarities of the passive or the hyper-supernatural.

The spirituality of physicality chapter, was particularly great with fresh insights and wisdom to shape a life in the pattern of Jesus. It is tempting only to examine Jesus' miracle-laden ministry, His teaching, His death and resurrection - to look forward at what is about to happen, not look back at what has been. For approximately 3 years Jesus
John Andrews weaves together a powerful narrative of the acceptance, authority and authenticity that flows from the life of Christ, through the power of the Holy Spirit. There are principles and practicalities abounding in this. Plenty of insights of real merit. Fresh stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Author! 12 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is a fab read!

A great book to help Christians ensure that they are developing every part of their lives as God intends. 2:52 A great model to build personal discipleship round.

Application to learning is a key thread, this based on John's own assertion that 'nothing is truly taught until something is learned, and nothing is truly learned until it is lived'. The book if filled with ideas as to how we can emulate Jesus' growth by applying ourselves to good learning practice and commonsense advice.

John's insight into the seemingly silent years of Jesus life is breathtaking and there are some great insights into the Jewish faith.

This is a must read for followers of Jesus everywhere!

5.0 out of 5 stars Be Challenged, Be Changed! 17 Jun. 2013
This book is a great read. John Andrews presents fresh insights from the early life of Jesus. From this perspective Andrews draws out fundamental principles of Christian discipleship in an accessible manner; he makes key truths (which pose a challenge)easy to grasp through personal anecdotes and helpful illustrations. Each chapter closes with thought-provoking points and study-guide questions for contemplation; a structure which demands the reader to take time to prayerfully reflect and examine the integrity of their Christian walk. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about being a disciple and passionate about discipling others. Andrews makes it clear that a Christ centred life must reflect the attitudes and values of Jesus and this begins with a close look at his life. This book also resonates with anyone who has a passion to teach, for us, it becomes evident that if we are going to imitate Christ we first need to live out what we learn from Him, making it an integral part of our identity before we can teach with any real sense of authentic authority. I finish with one of my favourite quotes 'Jesus demonstrates to us that if we determine to grow, we will.' This book was a real blessing. Thanks John.

Why bother? A variation on 'Jesus - the Missing Years' is a fruitless exercise. If it was relevant it would be in God's Book, not in the work of someone trying to find a different angle to justify some life coaching.
