1) Box Contents

The drive is supplied with a cloth, drawstring pouch, a short USB 3 cable and a paper quick-install guide.

The bag is sufficient to protect the drive from scratches if placed in a laptop carrycase, but a more robust carrying solution would be needed if the drive was to be transported separately.

The drive is noticeably slimmer than a standard Western Digital My Passport drive (see the uploaded customer image for a comparison side-by-side photograph). The case has a metal enclosure with matt-silver coloured top and black sides/bottom. Its modern, slim style will match very well with ultra-notebooks and MacBook Air laptops.

2) Using on a PC

I just plugged the drive into a USB 3 port and Windows 7 automatically installed the correct driver as I had had a previous Western Digital My Passport Drive. If this the first time you have installed a My Passport drive then Windows will still install a generic driver to get you started, however it is worth reading the manual on the disk drive to then install the SES driver.

On the drive are the detailed My Passport manual in PDF format and the installer software for various Western Digital disk applications. The applications included for a Windows PC are disk drive utilities, security to encrypt the drive contents and SmartWare - a comprehensive backup program. The SES driver is also included on the drive should this not already be installed on your PC. The SES driver is installed automatically if you install any of the applications or it can be installed on its own if you do not install any of the applications.

The SmartWare backup program can even backup to the Cloud but you require a Dropbox account for this feature.

This drive costs about 40% more than the 'Ultra' version, so what do you get for the extra outlay?

It's slightly smaller, has a very pretty metal enclosure (allegedly more durable); apart form that I can't see any differences. The software seems the same as the Ultra, and it's the same speed (No doubt limited by the USB as usual).

The only reason to get the Slim is if you like a metal finish or plan on dropping it a lot.

Considering this drive by itself, it is almost silent in operation and has a low power draw (which is good). The backup software has now matured and is pretty foolproof and has heavy emphasis on Cloud storage.

Overall a very nice drive, but consider the Ultra version if you want to save yourself some quite a chunk of cash.

I have a few WD Passport drives, and they are reliable and quick (USB 3.0 makes a world of difference for large data transfers).

Although my initial impression was this drive is not thinner by any significant difference, it is around the same size as the 1TB Ultra
I make the Ultra around 20mm including the bulge, and the Slim about 18mm but flat across the top. So same drive, thinner case.

The shiny finish Passport Essential drives (WDBACX)scratched badly. The later matt finish Passport Ultras (WDBY8L) has done much better, and mine is still scratch free a year later, and I don't use a case or treat is gently. This drive also lacked the little feet, so the case would touch every surface. Maybe the metal would be scratch resistant.

In the end the 2mm and Metal were not enough to justify the £30 price difference, so I swapped mine for the Ultra.

I saw some comments about warranty being out of region. For me this was because my WD account still showed United States as the region (probably a default), once updated this was resolved to in warranty.

The main WD Passport drives currently available are:
Elements (no SmartWare Pro, Cloud Backup or Hardware Encryption)
Ultra
Slim (metal case)

Bought two of these drives for backing up Macs via Time Machine. They look fabulous, and performance obviously very good (although I didn't measure it exactly) **BUT** ... the drives I received did not work properly with my 13" mid 2013 MacBook Air running MacOS 10.9.5

After reformatting to Mac HFS+ (Journalled) so they could be used with Time Machine, all initially seemed well. Inital full backup went very quickly, and several incrementals successfully written to WD disk. However, after about a day attached to the Mac both drives went catatonic - impossible to navigate the file hierachy on the drive via the Finder, and Disk Utility hangs when started, presumably becasue it's trying to get information from the drive, which isn't responding. WD Drive Utilities intermittantly reports the drive failing the Quick Self Test.

Checked the firmware, and the drives have the lastest available version as of November 2014, so sadly there's nothing for it but to return them as defective. Shame - I've had a great experience with a previous My Passport Studio on another Mac, and these drives look fabulous - slim, quiet, smart. However, they just didn't work with my MacBook Air, so they're being returned as defective.

ADDED LATER - Have just called Apple support about something else, and mentioned this problem to them in passing. They confirm that WD external disks and MacOS 10.9 have compatibility issues. "I lived through all that when Mavericks was released. A lot of people lost data on Western Digital external disks" said the nice lady at Apple.
