Product Description

In the 19th century, the craft of embroidery became a pastime for ladies of leisure. This beautiful new book explores the shift from industry to hobby and how embroidery was crafted and displayed in the home. Each chapter is packed with a close look at the techniques that were used, detailed illustrations and unique photographs of original 19th century embroidered pieces. Interweaved into the book are snippets of social history, historical facts and quotes from ladies and gentlemen of the period. This delightful book is a must for any student studying embroidery, fashion and textiles, craft persons interested in historical embroidery techniques, collectors of textiles, plus any needlework enthusiast wanting to extend their knowledge.

Embroidery History 7 Jan 2011

Since I had seen this book in the shops before I bought it its contents were no surprise. This is not a project book. It is a guide to different embroidery techniques used throughout the 19th century. I have found it very interesting and in this book there are no patterns as such but there is a guide as to how the techniques were achieved for instance there are pages showing (very clearly) how to do buttonhole or french knot stitches. There is a section dealing with mountmellick work stitches, crazy patchwork stitches etc. Sections include Canvas Work, Surface embroidery, whitework, patchwork and applique, fancy work.

I already owned 18th Century Embroidery techniques by the same author which was exceptionally good. Gail has done it again with this book. She provides the reader with a good background in 19th Century embroidery. It is very well written and very easy to read. She gives explanations as to how embroideries were constructed and which materials were used and how they were used. What makes this booke stand out from her previous book, is that it is divided into sections covering not only silk embroidery but also whitework, moutmellick and other types of embroidery. In addition she also gives very clear diagrams with instructions as to how to achieve the stitches. This book would be an excellent addition to a needlework bookshelf and be a handy reference guide not only to those who are just starting out, but also to students of embroidery and those wishing to move on to more advanced work. All in all, a really good book.

The breadth of depth of the information, pictures, samples and technical information in this book is amazing. I am just embarking on a creative stitches and textiles course and this is a wonderful source book for that. I particularly like the section on appliqué and this is what initially drew me to the book, and it didn't disappoint. I'm sure I will be saving my pennies for Gail's other books.
