Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Phillipe Zdar (one of the most important figures in late-1990s French music; as half of Motorbass, he made the classic Pansoul) brings something new to the now-familiar Paris sound--a touch of speed garage. It's nothing too heavy--slightly dubby house is still the plat du jour--but Zdar, with new collaborator Boombass, quickens the pace, and in doing so offers a new perspective on the most musically fashionable city of the 1990s. In doing so, the Cassius duo drop a lot of the cool in favour of just having fun. The title track, with its relentless "sunshine!" sample, hums with optimism and warmth. "Feelings For You" achieves the same effect--a happy-go-lucky sincerity that creates a great party album. --Charlie Porter

I absolutely loved all the remixes of Cassius tracks such as "La Mouche" (by DJ Falcon), "Feeling For You" (by Les Rythmes Digitales) and "Casiuss '99" that were available on the singles, but was slightly (and only slightly) disappointed with this album. It's a lot darker than the remixes, although it's still a work of genius. If you haven't heard any of the remixes, you will absolutely love this. Funky, clever and anthemic in one fell swoop. Well worth buying if you're into all that French disco stuff.

Cassius have been an interesting movement in French house, with Phillipe Zdare - a producer who knows about hip-hop, house and disco and Boom Bass, who's also produced hip-hop (Paradisiaque by MC Solaar was a big project for them), are now together to produce an interesting house album.

Here we have 1999, a disco tinged house album with a bit of speed garage, funk and soul thrown together. Some of the best tracks on here include 1999 Remix, which I thought was better than the original, as it's funkier and more manic - with it's vocal chop ups. There's also La Mouche with it's whiney 1 finger lead synth which reminds me of the early instrumental disco records. There's also a bit of breakbeat too - with Crazy Legs, it's dark dub sound with 808 beats makes it a good mid mix track.

One thing I didn't really like about the album is it sounds rather similar from start to end, but otherwise this is a ground breaking début for Cassius and should be in everyone's collection if they like Basement Jaxx, Daft Punk, Supermen Lovers and any other artists from the genre.

I have to agree with the last reviewer. I bought this in 1999 and while it is generally a decent album, I think it is too long and too many fillers. Having said that there are some very good tunes but I generally have to in the mood to listen to the whole lot without skipping through. It is quiet unfair to say this but it ain't "Daftpunk" and just too bland.
