5.0 out of 5 stars Hair Rock! 25 Aug 2005
Format:Audio CD
Ok, they must be the most unfashionable band in the world- the album is called 1987 after all. But this is drama rock at its best. It's still a bit silly lyrically, but compared to others in the genre it's well above par. What really impresses me is the guitarist John Sykes, he's got the definitive hard rock guitar sound on this album- the riffs are tight and heavy but their also musically powerful (which makes a change), his solos are fantastic too; long sustain, really wide vibrato and manic speed in all the right places. Coverdale pulls off astonishing vocal moments, in fact 'Still of the night' captures it all. Go, play, be unfashionable! this is high craft

This is the first vinyl that I brought when I was nine years old and what a cracker. For all you big Whitesnake fans there is a new 20th Anniversary special edition of this album with extra tracks, a small book and dvd that come out last year. 22 years later and this is still one of My favourite rock albums of all time. All the songs are very good but the five stand-out tracks for me are as follows: Still Of The Night, Is This Love, Here I Go Again, Looking For Love and Crying In The Rain. The two songs Here I Go Again and Crying In The Rain are newer better versions, which are taken from the album Saints And Sinners. The Whitesnake 1987 album sold over ten million worldwide and has aged very well indeed. Any rock lover should at least get this one cd by Whitesnake it is a classic and a real bargain at £3:98.

4.0 out of 5 stars A new Dawn... 3.5 stars 20 July 2010
By Mr Blackwell TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
The Emperors new clothes this one,the disc that propelled Coverdale to superstardom and left his credibility in shreds.

Oh the irony that the opening and best track is a complete Zeppelin by the Numbers job, fantastic though it is,was a bit cheeky,The irony that two of the best tracks were reworkings of older material from the Saints And Sinners album namely 'Here I Go Again & 'Cryin In The Rain',the definitive versions remain the originals, the irony that the version of 'Here I Go Again' that the masses lapped up was a radio mix that wasnt that on the 1987 album(it would appear on the Greatest Hits disc released 1994)and worst of all the two admitedly excellent sachrin covered pop of 'Is This Love/Lookin For Love' were an anathema at the time for most rock fans.

As for the rest cringe at the dated nonsense that is 'Bad Boys','Straight For The Heart','Dont Turn Away',Children Of The Night' and excreable 'Your Gonna Break My Heart Again' leaving the excellent 4th single 'Give Me All Your Love' to valiantly hold the fort.Interestingly the USA version had less tracks,i believe 'Lookin For Love ' and 'Dont Break My Heart Again' were left off.

The disc was the first DDD disc that I'd heard, the sound is fantastic, its a pity the quality of music was so variable, not quite as good as ome would have you believe 3.5 stars

If you love your guitars loud, heavy and melodic, then this is for you. This album doesnt sound like any of the previous whitesnake albums, this is heavier and more modern sounding; great songs, great playing, great production, its all here!John Sykes grabs this group by the throat,(as with his tenure in Thin Lizzy Thunder & Lightning) and energises it upwards and beyond, to the very top.Unfortunately, Sykesy and the rest of the group were all sacked on the records completion,so never got to tour these great songs. In fact, the only negative thing that I can say about this album is that David Coverdale is on it and his voice is clearly on the decline ,compared to his glorious past as are his naffer than naff lyrics. That said, I've got to say how brilliant Coverdale & John Sykes sing together,& note on the album Sykes is credited as 'Guitar & Vocals',not backing vocals,to get the full vocal onslaught from them both, listen to the album on headphones! Highlights; Still of the Night,Bad Boys,Give Me all Your Love are great songs with plenty of amazing air guitar moments ,the reworkings of Crying in the Rain and Here I go Again kick like never before and the softer stuff Is this Love & Don't turn away are fabulous.Even the so called 'filler' is great Children of the night and Straight for the heart, really consistantly strong stuff! To this day Coverdale has never paid the proper respect to the musicians involved here that helped turn him into a Megastar and with his countless line up changes since,Dorothy hasnt achieved anything like the critical or commercial success that he did here!Blue Murder

5.0 out of 5 stars Another classic 15 Jun 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Whitesnake are one of my favourite groups but am only now in a position to be able to buy many of the albums that I would have loved to buy when they were released. Amazon has made it possible to buy used albums at a fraction of their original price so I have been able to slowly add to my collection of amazing cd's. I don't analise every album because at these prices you can just buy them and enjoy them. David Coverdale is as good now as he was in 1987 as I found out at the Whitesnake, Thunder and Journey concert at the LG arena recently and Whitesnake should have headlined, not Journey as Coverdale and Whitesnake have a stage presence that Journey could not compete with. Just buy this cd. You'll not regret it.
