Biography

Whitesnake are an English rock band, founded in 1977 by David Coverdale (formerly of Deep Purple). The band's early material has been compared by critics to Deep Purple but by the mid 1980s Whitesnake had moved away from the early blues influenced hard rock to a more commercial heavy metal style. Whitesnake was named the 85th greatest hard rock band of all time by VH1.

Hair Rock! 25 Aug 2005
Format:Audio CD
Ok, they must be the most unfashionable band in the world- the album is called 1987 after all. But this is drama rock at its best. It's still a bit silly lyrically, but compared to others in the genre it's well above par. What really impresses me is the guitarist John Sykes, he's got the definitive hard rock guitar sound on this album- the riffs are tight and heavy but their also musically powerful (which makes a change), his solos are fantastic too; long sustain, really wide vibrato and manic speed in all the right places. Coverdale pulls off astonishing vocal moments, in fact 'Still of the night' captures it all. Go, play, be unfashionable! this is high craft

If you love your guitars loud, heavy and melodic, then this is for you. This album doesnt sound like any of the previous whitesnake albums, this is heavier and more modern sounding; great songs, great playing, great production, its all here!John Sykes grabs this group by the throat,(as with his tenure in Thin Lizzy Thunder & Lightning) and energises it upwards and beyond, to the very top.Unfortunately, Sykesy and the rest of the group were all sacked on the records completion,so never got to tour these great songs. In fact, the only negative thing that I can say about this album is that David Coverdale is on it and his voice is clearly on the decline ,compared to his glorious past as are his naffer than naff lyrics. That said, I've got to say how brilliant Coverdale & John Sykes sing together,& note on the album Sykes is credited as 'Guitar & Vocals',not backing vocals,to get the full vocal onslaught from them both, listen to the album on headphones! Highlights; Still of the Night,Bad Boys,Give Me all Your Love are great songs with plenty of amazing air guitar moments ,the reworkings of Crying in the Rain and Here I go Again kick like never before and the softer stuff Is this Love & Don't turn away are fabulous.Even the so called 'filler' is great Children of the night and Straight for the heart, really consistantly strong stuff! To this day Coverdale has never paid the proper respect to the musicians involved here that helped turn him into a Megastar and with his countless line up changes since,Dorothy hasnt achieved anything like the critical or commercial success that he did here!

I remember buying this album a few years ago and only knowing two of the tracks that were on it. After listening to the other nine tracks I was most definitely there and then a Whitesnake fan. This album won't appeal to everyone no doubt, but if you're a fan of 80's rock I would recommend it. In fact, I would go as far as saying that this is the best album I have ever bought (including compilations).
