So earlier this year Vic Godard decided that it was time to record these songs with their original spirit and sound so that they could be properly heard so he re-grouped Subway Sect and put them back into the studio to record the album.
The resulting 14 recordings are contained here in `1978 Now'.
"If such a thing could be measured, Subway Sect were, for a couple of seasons in 1978, the greatest punk rock group in the UK, if not the world." - Jon Savage
"Vic is the great lost soul of the era: his nihilism is more extreme than anyone's. He seemed to hsve seen through the circus which he was being enticed into, from day one. He saw all the contradictions and didn't want to be a pop star." - Geoff Travis

1978 then?,
By Demolition Boy (Stroud, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 1978 Now (Audio CD)
If this was 1978 now and the web had prematurely appeared from the singularity of cyberspace this wouldn't be the first Amazon review of this platter - the plaudits would have long ago rolled in. Other online reviews have hinted at this being as groundbreaking as 'The Scream' or 'Unknown Pleasures' - if released in 1978. This album is neither of those, it's a separate oeuvre - but it certainly would have been a groundbreaking departure from the rapidfire 1,2,3,4 rhythms that Punk had lost itself in by '78, and really is a 'lost classic' of the Punk period.
Rotten has stated that Punk should have been about lot's of original, different types of bands - not the uniform mohawk parody of itself that it became. Subway Sect, one of the original Punk bands are an example of what British Punk could have become - and here's the evidence. The album was originally recorded in 1978 - and never released; Bernie Rhodes, manager of the Clash and also Subway Sect refused to release the album - apparently saying that the band couldn't play their instruments, and the tapes were lost, according to singer Vic Godard, in a studio flooding incident. Hence the band finally got back together to re-record a sound that should have gone overground in '78. The first 2 tracks - 'We Oppose all Rock and Roll' and 'Stayin' Out of Touch' would have made worthy 45rpm releases at the time, sounding as essential as Subway Sect's only releases at that speed - 'Nobody's Scared' and 'Ambition', neither of which feature on this new release - the latter being replaced by 'Rock 'n' Roll Even'. 'Eastern Europeans' stands out, as does 'Stool Pigeon' - possibly an unremarkable sound now, but a track that in terms of the year '78 hinted at a different direction. This album would certainly have made an alternative top 10 albums of 1978. You can listen to the sound samples - and make your own mind up. Vic Godard's unique voice still sounds as great now as it did back then; Subway Sect are part of a lost history of great but unchampioned bands. With hindsight Vic Godard and the other members of the early Sect may wish that Mr Rhodes had not become their manager. They may well have not been the most competent musicians around at the time - but that was hardly the point back then. The urgency and delivery of this music makes it an essential listen if you're interested in the late 70's time period. Great band live too.

This is my favorite UK punk band from 70's.
They never release their punk LP in punk era. (What's the matter boy? LP is pop album ,I think.) Wow!! I'm so surprised to hear this 70's punk sound with original artist in nowaday. My favorite songs are " Stayin' out of touch " " Stool pigeon " " Derail your senses " & "Stand back" they 're stuck in my mind. Vic's unique voice & original sound of the Sect in '1978 NOW' can make you cry!!! Greatest lost punk band !!!
