These 4 discs on Easy Action comprise a great companion set to "The Idiot" & "Lust For Life" albums of 1977. Most of the live recordings here are about average bootleg quality for the era, but the performances are pretty good and provide a raw, energetic edge in contrast to some of their studio counterparts, particularly those on "The Idiot". Housed in an pleasing 10 X 6 inch digipak, the packaging is quite an improvement on Easy Action's previous Iggy box set (Where The Faces Shine). Informative liner notes and contemporary photographs round this package off nicely.

Disc 1 contains the Paris Hippodrome 23rd September gig, complete with "Nightclubbing" which was absent from previous releases of this show. Iggy's mic feedback is still present, nothing can be done about that, otherwise this is a brilliant show and sets the scene nicely for the collection as a whole.

Disc 2 begins with assorted studio outtakes & alternate mixes of some "Idiot" songs, plus an interview. Not mentioned in the Amazon track listing is track 6, a full 33 minutes of a "Rock Around The World" radio programme which mixes complete live performances (excellent recording quality, from 15th March?) with further interview snippets.

Disc 3 is a superb audience recording from 7th March at the London Rainbow Theatre. The set list is almost entirely alternate to that of the later Paris show, and of course features David Bowie on keyboards and backing vocals.

Disc 4 takes us forward again to September, this time the Kant Kino Club in Berlin on the 18th. The show is incomplete, and duplicates much of Paris, but the quality of recording is better and another suitably powerful performance justifies its inclusion within this excellent collection.

1977 and Iggy reinvents himself with Bowie as mentor. Transported to Berlin to escape the ravages of Cocaine filled LA Iggy begins rehab in Kreutxberg and Neukoln.

His DNA must be made of sandstone as the porous qualities imbibe the neu sounds of German experimentation within a Stooges framework. The result is 2 startling albums for Iggy and 3 for David.

Berlin pre wall was claustrophobic, grey and Dyonisian. Try living every day as though it is your last!! So much for the rehab qualities but Iggy manages to pull through with Lust for Life. Distancing himself from his xcess he exhorts the listener to live not drown. Nightclubbing to the ever threat of the nuclear bomb, hymns to inter racial sex at a time when it was verboeten whilst dredging his soul for angst around the loss of friendship. Most musicians probably make 1 or 2 good albums, Iggy has made 5 great pieces of art, 2 of them are included on this disc.

The shows are raw and chaotic as the band thrash to the zeitgeist with Iggy exhorting the end of stardom, oh those were the days!! Integrating the Stooges into his live set it is less Metallic KO as it is polished by David. You can glimpse his iron rod on some of the dialogue excerpts.

Is it worth it?? For those of a certain age it is a necessity. For the younger have a listen as a piece of history but buy the studio version first.

The supposed Idiot outtakes are fake, after all why would the Idiot sessions include dialogue between bowie & Trevor Boulder?
The Berlin show is slowed down to the point where i can't listen to it, the Paris show is sped up and sounds like chipmunks, the London & Paris shows have been ruined by too much noise reduction.
most of this can be blamed on incompetence but the faked Idiot session shows intent to deceive.

it really isn't rocket science the Sex Pistols Box set "Never Trust a Hippy" shows how this should be done- take a good transfer of the bootleg correct any pitch problems but don't attempt to "improve" it with noise reduction or you'll end up with a train wreck

you'd be better off trying to find proper bootlegs which, strange as it seems were compiled with more care than this supposedly "legit" product

"Nightclubbing" on Cool records is a good place to start, you can hear at least some of the Berlin show at the correct speed
