Last Step is another pseudonym for Aaron Funk (which I suspect may not be his real name), better known as Venetian Snares.

The most recent Venetian Snares album was "Detrimentalist", which I thought was quite mellowed out compared to the raw fury of some of his earlier work. "1961" is much mellower still.

This is the happy acid. There are some distinctive Venetian Snares-like glitchy touches, weird time signatures, and sudden leaps- as you'd expect the whole thing has that manic feel. It's bright and perky, with plinky synths, and major chords. In places it's really jazzy, and of course it's a lot of fun. I'd even go so far as to call it 'gentle'.

Definitely worth a listen.

Last Step is Venetian Snares' Aaron Funk leaving behind the signature breakcore of that alias for some more subdued experiments. "More subdued," though, does not by any means mean subdued; the tracks here can get caustic, speed up, zig where they should zag. What's impressive about Funk's Last Step music and this album in particular is that it firmly establishes that Funk is not just a prankster but a guy writing compelling, complex music in whatever style he chooses. There are plenty of albums in this approximate style by 2014 but this still stands a step above.

If you like this, too, also check out the Last Step album Sleep and more recent Kid 606 albums.
