Just before the storm 18 Nov 2006
By Richard
Format:Audio CD
Its a great idea to issue a 3 CD set which concentrates on just one year. The results are that much of it is now known of but never really heard as little of this music found its way to the UK-the source of this collection by Castle Sanctuary

1954 was in fact the year of Rock Around the Clock but its not the Haley version here its the original one by a country act called Sonny Dae & the Knights and was in fact a Tin Pan Alley song with a complicated history which was really a copy of Hank Williams' Move it on over-but he never heard it as he passed away the previous year.

A booklet included gives full details of all the artists who include many future stars like the Platters,Ray Charles,Etta James,Charlie Gracie, the Drifters, the Big Bopper and Freddie Bell & the Bellboys who recorded Hound Dog before Elvis.Though Bill Haley was too early for Rock Around the Clock by the defintions held here he's represented by 4 previous recordings.Haley was in fact just about the first to explore the new music which became rock'n'roll at least 3 years earlier-his cover of Rock the Joint has the same instrumental break as his version of Rock around the Clock!

What is seen here in embryo form are the twin strands of country and blues which were to become the hybrid of rock'n'roll. However none of that was known in England where the music was passed off as no more than a fad and it was not until the Beatles years that any attempts were made to document the music in the same way jazz was being documented in the 50s.

Somehow clearance has been obtained to include Elvis' Sun recordings-not even the various Sun boxes could do that and instead had to settle for the Million Dollar Quartet-but it gives the collection more of a sense of proportion. After all it looks ridiculous to issue 50s collections without any Elvis but this is a plus factor here.

Amongst a load of obscure names you can't help but notice a group who were named the 4 Tophatters!

Good value 28 April 2006

Bit of a mixed bag really. A combination of black RNB/jump blues and white country/rockabilly with a bit of pre-RNR dance band thrown in. Basically there's something for everyone which you'd expect with 60 tracks. Can't beat it for value though.
