4.0 out of 5 stars Love & Laughter 2 May 2004
By A Customer
I first saw this movie as a child, and I was so taken with Anil Kapoor in the scene where he sings *that* song on huge bed wearing red satin pyjamas that I had to go out and buy myself piar!
This is such a beautiful story. Based in partition times, it recognises the struggles in post colonial India but weaves into it a thread of love and laughter. Fantastically innocent, this Bollywood love story is far removed from the tacky rebditions that currently grace our screen.
An engaging and enjoyable sound track follows Anil Kapoor as he rides through Bombay onhis bicycle in search of love. Some stunning footage and a grim reminder of the effects of political upheavals.
Worth watching.

4.0 out of 5 stars Star peformance from Anil Kapoor & Manisha 10 Jan 2006
By A Customer
This is a great movie (despite the strange & wonderfully overacted role of Brian Glover which will give British viewers a surprise). The character played by Manisha Koirala (the heroine) is beautifully portrayed, as are the roles played by Anil Kapoor (the hero) and Anupam Kher (father of the heroine). About half way through the movie there is a big gear shift, as the story moves from the typical Bollywood love story into something more political, as the freedom fighters plot to assassinate the British General. The movie ends in dramatic style as the hero prepares to sacrifice himself for the greater good of the emerging India...but who knows what will happen next? There are similarities in content and style with Mani Ratnam's 'Bombay' (1995) in which Manish Koirala also stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely songs and beautiful cinematography 13 May 2010
By Z Hayes - Published on
"1942: A Love Story" stars Anil Kapoor and Manisha Koirala in the lead roles, with other notable names such as Jackie Shroff, and Anupam Kher. The setting is India in 1942, a rather volatile time when India was still under British rule and where there were basically two factions - the Indians that supported the colonialists and those that were rallying for liberation. In this context, a pair of young lovebirds find themselves torn apart by politics - Naren Singh (Anil Kapoor) comes from a prominent family and his father is a British lackey, whilst Rajeshwari (Manisha Koirala)'s father is actively involved in anti-British activities. The story focuses on the choices this young couple make and the consequences.

One of the highlights of this movie is the lovely score and the beautiful, poetic songs such as Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To, Pyar Hua Chupke Se, Kuch Na Kaho, and Rim Zim Rim Zim. The cinematography is beautifully done and the main actors deliver credible performances. This is another title I'd like to see released in Blu-Ray.

best: songs, Manisha Koirala and Anil Kapoor are very watchable.
on the other hand: characters have no depth, all good or all bad.
