This book reads like a 10 year old's school project on fashion. Badly illustrated, shoddily researched, and not at all in-depth.
If you really want the lowdown on the styles of the decade then get 'Everyday Fashions of the Forties'. That book is a winner.
This book, I'm sorry to say, is a waste of money.

Not the best book I've ever read on 30's clothing, but a good starter. A slim volume that slips in socio-economic issues of the time (Roosevelt's "New Deal", the Berlin Olympics and such) which is nice for them as is new to the period, but perhaps not so much for them that wants more photos/illustrations of what the Fashion Houses were turning out not to mention Hollywood/the East Coast of America's influence on them. There are some nice photos etc. & for the price (just over £5 for a nearly new hard-back, ex libris Titusville, Pennsylvania) I am NOT complaining....
It just left me wanting LOTS more... Which, I suppose, is not a bad thing for a clothes nut ;-)

This book should be called "history of a decade with some references to fashion" there are very few photos and a lot of very poor illustrations.

This book was written using a KISS approach- Keep it short and simple. I love the fact that it was a really easy read and had lots of good photo's in it. My son even had a flick through it! Ienjoyed it because I love the clothing of the 1940's and it didn't disappoint.

recipient was delighted with contents of book per se but would have liked more in the way of designs otherwise satisfied

As well as showing you fashion crazes it tells you about the inspiration behind these fashions and what new fabrics were used for them. I found it really helpful with my studies because it tells you what was happening in the outside world when the designs were made. It definitely opens your eyes to what went on then, if like me, you weren't lucky enough to be there, or if you were it would certainly bring back memories. The illustrations and photographs bring to life the whole 60s experience and make it even more fascinating then I originally thought it was. This book is worth buying just to dip into every now and again even if you are not studying fashion.
