Product Description

Product Description

For the wealthy, the eighteenth century was a period of decadent splendour, and their clothing was no exception - sumptuous fabrics were embellished with lavish, ornate embroidery. Gail Marsh, a costume and textiles curator and senior lecturer in fashion and textiles for many years, has delved into archives to research the techniques and tools that embroiderers of the day used to create such bewitching items of clothing, plus: relevant quotations from ladies and gentlemen of the period; intricate drawings of costume pieces, annotated with the greatest detail; demonstrations of the stitches, threads and techniques that were used; and colour photographs of the museum-held pieces.

Amazingly Readable! 7 Oct 2007
By Freespirit TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book does exactly what it says in the title. It takes you through some of the techniques used by embroiderers in the 18th century. The photographs are clear and easy to study. The techniques are copyable by someone who is familiar with embrodiery stitches. For beginners, I would suggest you purchase a book on 'How To Do Embroidery' which will help you understand someof the concepts in this book. Although I bought this primarily as a reference book, I found it actually readable and enjoyable. It is a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in fine embroidery. Well work a look.

Really good book 2 Jan 2012
Format:Hardcover
I was brought this book from my wish list for Christmas. I had no real idea how good it would be. Yes some basic embrodiery skills are needed but are worth learning as many ideas could be adapted for current fashion trends. I found interesting because it showed ideas and techniques as well as giving little bits of fashion history. I have now put the other books by this author on my wish list and have my fingers crossed.
