Amongst those who play the music it is generally agreed that Michael Coleman represents the pinacle of recorded traditional Irish Music. This recording leaves the listener in no doubt why this is so.Coleman had a total command of the fiddle and a genius for melodic variation. What sets him apart from his contemporaries and many of todays players is his ability to express all levels of emotion in his music. Coleman is reputed to have said that"..all the sadness of my life is in my music".
This recording covers Colemans commercial recording career. Whilst some of the piano accompianiment is poor the beauty of the fiddle comes through. A minor critisism is that the producer, Harry Bradshaw, has slowed some tracks down (particularly jigs)in the mistaken belief that the 78s from which they were taken were recorded at the wrong speed. Having said that this is obviously a labour of love and full credit to Harry for this great production. For those who love traditional Irish music in its pure form there is no better recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterful performance 15 Feb 2002
By Trevor - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Michael Coleman's influence on the world of traditional Irish music was, and still is, enormous. His albums came out just as music was finally made portable, and were incredibly popular in Ireland. Each village would have perhaps one phonograph, at which everyone in the town would gather when a new Coleman record was released.
And don't think that this music is dated, despite the fact that it will be a century old before long. The tone of Coleman's fiddle is something that's never been duplicated. His playing so fiery, so perfect. He was truly a master of his instrument. Any fan of the traditional music should own this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have for Irish Fiddle 24 Nov 2002
By Brad Maloney - Published on
Format:Audio CD
If you really want to get down to the nuts & bolts of what traditional Irish music is - this album is a must have. While it isn't an audiophiles dream, it is one of the most exciting recordings a fan of Irish fiddle could hope for. Some tracks are marred by insensitive studio piano players who cared little for Irish music, others are backed up well. Although these tracks have been picked over for scratches & pops, many tracks are still scratchy & fuzzy. All this aside, the fiddle playing is brilliant & his music is a perfect example of the Sligo style. This album also includes the most informative liner notes I've ever seen, I would pay the price of the CD for the booklet alone.
