I really enjoyed this book. I find Quintin Barry to be an excellent writer and a pleasure to read. This book is beautifully illustrated throughout with many pictures and atmospheric sketches which I have never seen before.

I have a strong interest in this war but tend to gloss over the post Sedan period. This book however opened my mind and extended my interest. As much as I love the nitty gritty of battles I have to say that I found the detail a little heavy going in parts. I am delighted to have such details but only if the battles and combats are accompanied by explanatory maps. This is the reason I do not give this book 5 stars. The maps are pleasant and colourful but an awful lot of detail and above all pivotal place names are missing. This greatly diminishes the value of the book and takes away not only the pleasure of reading the book but also its value as a reference work. I also found the chronology a little confusing sometimes and had to keep copious notes as I read.

So top marks for content but the book is dragged down by unsatisfactory maps.

This is a welcome account of a little known, but very interesting, campaign in the latter phases of the Franco-Prussian War 1870-71..Packed full of detail, personality sketches and b&w engravings, the text perhaps does not run as freely as one would wish, but the quality of the publication by Helion, and the depth of the author's knowledge of the subject is impressive. The colour maps are a little disappointing though and not that easy to follow.
